VIN numbers were introduced long after S2 production ended. Chassis numbers are what S2 have stamped on the O/S dumbiron and screw on bulkhead plate

Slightly off topic, but as we're taking brakes it's relevant.

After advice from this forum I replaced all 4 front wheel cylinders about a year ago. Before I fitted, I removed the pistons and smeared a little red brake grease around the seal. I also filled the dust cap with same grease. These were Britpart cylinders and so far they are working well.

Archie, how well do you know your way around a S2? The chassis number which you refer to as a VIN is stamped on the o/s dumb iron and is replicated on the tin plate screwed to the bulkhead. Minor variations in other Series vehicles.

The true ID of the vehicle is the VIN.
In modern vehicles, this is confirmed ONLY as the STAMPED VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on the chassis. NOT a Visible VIN, or VIN Plate.

As the S2 only has the VIN plate (on the bulkhead) this is the only True ID.

I assume that if you move this plate to a new bulkhead and / or chassis, the vehicle ID moves with it, providing that a substantial amount of the vehicle remains original.

Once this is confirmed, you could probably change everything on the vehicle and still have an 'original'

Fair point. I do look at and read some of the Series 1,2 3 and Light Weight Facebook group stuff.

Personally I think the S2C has hit a nice equilibrium between the Forum and the Facebook group. Both serve a slightly different purpose and compliment each other if you happen to use both.

This is more of an observation than anything directly to do with Series Land Rovers.
There has been much discussion and hand wringing about replacement chassis for our Series 2s. 
I thought I should throw in the fact (as far as I am aware) that, for example, Triumph TR chassis have no identifying numbers stamped on them. The vehicle identity is given by a plate rivetted (?) on the body bulkhead. At least this was the case with my 1954 TR2.
So how this affects the definitive vehicle identity I am not sure.

That surely depends on the actual total length of the rod in each case? If the length is the same, but earlier ones are only partly threaded, then the number of threads engaged is bound to be less than with the later fully-threaded type. That perhaps was a reason for the changeover?
The point surely is that the clamp on a partly-threaded tube will not clamp properly on the threads of a fully-threaded TRE, because it is intended for the slightly larger diameter of the shouldered TRE?

I'd imagine the core members of EMLRA are possibly even more old codgerish and Facebook adverse so I just don't get making the forum essentially 'pay to view'

I`m a full member of EMLRA but hadn't visited the site for a while. You'd think paying members would have been told about these changes, but I`ve not received anything.

When I last looked in on the new site, there were a pitiful 5 posted topics across the 5 main categories, so it seems that everything that came before has been lost. It`s sad to see any club go under, but didn`t someone say, use it or lose it?

It`s another sign of the times, as in the same way the younger generation are much less likely to watch television, instead they get everything on their phones.

Whatever magic the S2C    is making, lets keep on making it, because it seems to be bucking a very sorry trend
