General Discussion / Re: The 'Rover' Bicycle - some...

To be honest it is something I only recently found out.
Knew Rover made cycles and had heard of the 'safety' but did not realise one and the same.

I get the idea my big reveal is common-knowledge to all, I knew of the 'Safety' not sure why I didn't know it was a 'Rover'.

In some countries the generic term for a bicycle is a "rover", just like we use "hoover" or "biro"...

I own a Penny Farthing. An original Singer. Yes it's the same Singer of sewing-machine fame. I learnt something today...

Can't imagine it's news to most of you, a good many car and motorcycle makers were cycle manufacturers first. Me or members of my family have owned Triumph, BSA & Singer cycles.

What I hadn't realised is that it was Rover, our Rover that produced the first 'modern' bicycle. The now standard layout of two same-size wheels, pedals and chain. 'The Safety' is a Rover. The point I'm making is this, I've ridden a Penny Farthing... once. I strongly suggest you don't. The viable bicycle is not a Penny Farthing, it's a Rover.

Rover made them safe, and yes... it's the same Rover, the same company.

Fitted new steering joints onto track rod and drag link. Also made a tracking stick out of an old broom handle. It made setting the toe-in easier.

Steers great now!

Thanks for the offer but if mine are correct, then I will stick with them. Just get the clasps.

General Discussion / A weekend jaunt to the GCR
Last post by steifbear - Yesterday at 10:43 PM

A quick blast down the M1 to Loughborough saw us stopping near Quorn and Woodhouse station on the GCR for the weekend to celebrate my Dads 70th birthday and his Retirement.

The 9x9 Wolf tent got its first airing since last summer, it's very easy to forget just how heavy they are!

The Great Central Railway is one of our favourite preserved lines so a chance to watch the trains go by was not turned down.

While having breakfast at the fantastic cafe at the station I spied a lovely looking Aveling and Porter roller in the yard.

It so happened that our good friends Kat and Jason know the owner well and let us know that they would be roading it back to the owners house on the Monday
When someone asks "would we like to join them" it would be rude to say no right!?

There is something very special about watching road steam chuffing along making a cacophony of noise and holding up traffic through the centre of Loughborough

My Dad also joined us in his recently recommissioned 1966 Mark 1 Cortina

All in all a great trip away in the sunshine. That is until the final bit of the A1 north of Sheffield when we hit the torrential rain! 🌧

I agree, one of the best Land Rover Forums.

Although I am a Series 3 owner I have been made very welcome in the club and I haven't been ostracized because I'm not a Series 2/2A owner.
The membership fee of £25 is very good value for money and I can't think of a more friendly club to join.
