I have changed the 2 front dumb irons and fitted new shocks and springs.
Both sides are now the same length between the spring bush and front mounting holes.
Previously there was 1/2" difference.
Found that the near side dumb iron had been patched over some rather large ripples.

Dragged my project out of the bushes last week, I put it there 3 years ago as a temporary measure, and then life got in the way.
Hopefully I'll now be able to crack on and make a little progress!

Well, my trip to the grocery turned more exciting than I expected. 2 miles from town I started hearing a ticking noise. It slowly got louder and I deduced it was rotational in source. I finally figured it was the speedo cable by the time I got to the store. After shopping it started right away and continued at slower than 25mph speeds, above that no noise. By the time I got home It had turned into a squeek and I figured the bushing in the speedo needed lube.
So after putting the groceries away I pulled the speedo and took it apart and cleaned and lubed the bushing. Then put it all back together. Testing with an old cable and drill I could hear no squeak.

Sorted out the wiring to the front lights - brittle looms after dismantling. Mainly trimming back and re- bulleting. New indicator and its loom. Bits from Embertons - quick delivery and club discount.
Road legal again so 7 miles for petrol and Maltesers. SS exhaust sounds different but no leaks

Picked up my S2 from my mechanic's workshop after he's fitted my new set of Jones Springs.

Wow - what a difference!  I had no idea how much my previous set had deteriorated over the last 20 or so years, despite my best efforts with a wire brush and motorcycle chain grease..........

I'm a happy bunny again.

Our garden was left during the time that we were looking after mother in law and we are trying to get it back to some kind of order so lots of cutting down and digging up and it all has to go to the tip.  It is a good excuse to keep driving the land rover, every day if possible.

I adjusted the exhaust valve clearances on the Dormobile yesterday after having replaced the camshaft in November 2021. I had left the clearances a bit bigger than .010 just to make sure the valves closed, but it was noisy. However I found the exhaust manifold nuts a bit loose and some soot was on the gasket, so maybe the noise was an exhaust leak ... anyway after cleaning the gasket and careful re-assembly it should all be quieter now.

On the engine side of the bulkhead I'll be using expandable braided sleeving and heat shrink to keep all the wires together and cover them up.for other places needing a bit more protection I've bought some different sizes of pvc sleeving and I'll use glue lined heat shrink as well to waterproof it

If you click on reply, rather than using the quick reply function, you will see a "Click or drag files here to attach them" box. Click on that and add your images as before. Just remember to keep the file sizes low or the system will reject them.

Note that this is not a Series 2 Club event, but I hope those attending have an enjoyable weekend.

MOT passed first time without any advisories. This was a surprise because due to a complicated house move I've not taken a wheel off for 2 years to check things like the brakes. I told the garage they could replace any part of the brake system they were concerned about.
They are replacing the clutch cylinders and flexy line because the clutch resovoir was empty until I topped it up to drive to the garage.

Yet another tip run this afternoon getting rid of stuff that my wife has cut down.  I have to bag it up too, at least it is an excuse to drive YOD.  Now I have just finished removing and refitting a tyre to put the inner tube fitted by a tyre place in the correct way round.  Doing 750s with levers in this heat is hard work when you get past 70.  It has reminded me though why I change my own.  I did one on the rally field at Rutland in 2018 and that was a warm day.  Wittsend has a photo of me outside the community centre afterwards and I look knackered.

It's been insured for Fire and Theft only while SORNed so two days ago I insured it for the road: a whopping £3.87 a month extra fully comp! Then yesterday that nice algorithm at DVLA confirmed I could drive it on the road. So I did.

Took it for a bit of on-roading for the first time in about a decade.
Half a mile up the hill and back down. Some snagging to do but I am quite pleased. :cheers-man

Gearbox and clutch replaced, new speedo cable, seatbox repaired, new doors fitted and painted, electrics rehashed, brakes .... that's where the snagging's needed, coolant temp gauge (it's a 19J so not compatible with the panel gauge), indicator switch stripped and rewired (port and starboard lights on a "new" panel to the right of the steering wheel), LEDs all round, apart from the headlights. A local garage will give it a proper look over when I've cleared out all the tools, leftover parts, empty fluid bottles, boxes of fasteners and oily rags.

Still to do (will it ever end?): map and wrap the "loom", insulate the roof with leftovers from the Vivaro camper-conversion, deaden the doors and rear tub (ditto), fit the LED work lamps, sort out the door-catches and locks, sliding window snibs etcetera....

And I suppose I should tidy up the yard so my grandsons don't trip over the cr@p I've left lying about.

I've really only worked on this since October 2022 though I've had the replacement gearbox since 2012, I think, and the vehicle itself I bought in 1986. This isn't the first time I've posted a list of things I've done to it. Here it is on a borrowed trailer last August.

It's dark just now. I'll take some new photos tomorrow. Weather permitting.

Not done yet but I have small round mirrors on the wings at the moment and bought 2 extra long mirror arms as from what I have read they are better on the door hinges also 2 rectangle 7x5 mirrors as I am going to replace the round ones for the bigger 7x5 mirrors and then put the round ones on the longer arms then onto the door hinges and set for parking ie what have most of you found best if you have both sets on your Landy.

LOL look at my wing mirrors.
We can when you get back if that suits as I am guessing your busy getting ready for the rally I would have liked to come but my son is home on the 11th for a short period (Navy) but if "IF this rain stops" before that would be great as I just got the Landy back on Friday but a few more things to go back in for in a couple of weeks ie fuel tank changing and some electrics. Painted a wheel,2 trips to the tip with garden rubbish, a trip to the garden centre to buy some bags of compost and a new garden fork.  Replaced the duff heater rheostat switch with one from the "stores" and investigated a very slight hardly noticeable diesel leak which has reulted in the ordering of a replacement pipe.

At the time of dismantling, I will take the opportunity to install an ARB locker.

Finally got around to fitting the proper deep sills back to my 109.

Many years ago, when I was in my off roading and green laning phase, I fitted rock slider sills. Now I'm over that, I thought it would be nice to put it back as it should be.

I hunted around and acquired all the bits, YRM for the brackets. Paddocks for a couple of panels. I think they look much better. A bit fiddly but easy enough with a bit of fettling.

One side done, one to go.

Saw my first Grenadier last night, it's a bit of a beast! And in an urban environment as well.

Today checking the electrics for a visit to the LR show in Shepton Mallet tomorrow.

We've been busy in the Club cutaway engine. Starting to look like an engine again as opposed to a pile of bits. Found some more bits I'm missing so will post on the main thread.

Not exactly what I have done but yesterday I got a parcel from Rob Maude.

A couple of weeks ago I sent him the components of a 1958 apron, he has very kindly rivetted them together and has added the webbing side pieces.

I was given this by our very kind treasurer Tom Pilling.I had the galv strip regalvanised and  afriend who runs the local welding place welded some new metal into the aluminium part where it was knackered

It is a thing of beauty if you ignore my poor quality painting.

I just have to find time to fit it now

Follow on from yesterday with the apron, I thought I would have a trial fit

4 bumper bolts undone, only 2 spire screws on the old one so they are undone. Apron off, new one offered up and new holes in bumper drilled.
I thought I would take the opportunity just to paint the insde of the dumb iron whilst there is access. Bumper off, wire brush on dumb iron and I have found a hole so there will be a short short delay. I need a new cylinder of welding gas and the weather is a bit iffy this week. I might get it done on thursday or friday. Only a small hole and I have had a good bang at the metal round it and it is ringing so that is agood sign.  At least it is easy to get at when the bumper is off
