I thought I would post the same comment on here as I've just done on FB, here goes:

Well it's been an extremely difficult decision, but George will be attending the NEC this year, but not on a club stand. I've decided that my hobby of classic cars must come to an end (I sold my Spitfire last year). My decision was based around a few areas the main one being my health, after the last repair / up-grade I was left in a bit of a mess with cuts and bruises which any normal person would have not suffered as my skin is that thin these days. I'm not saying George needs repairing every week but it's made me realise something needs to change, for sure I wouldn't trust anyone else around George so for me this is the best option. The valuation has been set by the auction house I really don't know if he will go for the price indicated but for sure if he does sell the new owner will be getting something over and above the norm.

I'm sure it will be interesting for other members to see how this goes, I'm not saying it sets a bench mark but it will give you an idea how the market is seen these days.

I will say I have enjoyed being a club member, this year was different but I certainly don't regret any of the decisions made, hopefully things will continue as planned as for sure the club will prosper and continue to grow with a strong membership behind it.

Hi Rob.  I recently parted with my 1961 S2a for similar reasons to yours. I sold it back to the person I had bought it from just over a year previously. Regretted it of course, but it had to go.
The price I got was essentially just at the lower end of your auction estimate, so (despite the opinions of many old timers on the forum!) I think those estimates are reasonable.
I will get my hard hat right away!!

Hi Rob,

Not an easy decision to make, I bet. George is a credit to you, and I'm sure the new owner will appreciate it. I'll be on the S2C stand at the NEC in November and I'll keep an eye on the auctions on Saturday. Fingers crossed you get a very fair price for all you've invested.

Best of luck with the sale, I'm not a believer in high prices being a good thing for the movement given spares and insurance tend to follow but I'd say you are cashing in at the top of the market cycle so now might be the time before prices have an adjustment.

Lovely looking truck.

Things that jump out to me.

- Door hinges.
- Wheels
- Wing Mirrors
- LED sidelights
- Luggage clips on the softop sides?

On the plus side it is a lovely vehicle, with some very good upgrades. I can't help but think that top dollar would be better suited to a more original vehicle. But that's just my opinion.

Also, call me cynical, it would appear that it has hardly been driven. It's almost too good/clean. There's virtually no wear on the paint on the pedals.

Lovely show queen, and I'm sure a good purchase for someone. But in my opinion it needs some miles and some mud on it.

Best of luck with the sale. I hope it goes to a worthy home.

For some of us (and I think Rob is one of these as he has restored other cars and builds RC boats) the pleasure is in the building more than the driving.  I have seen this vehicle close up in the flesh and it has been built to the highest standards.  Rob is a perfectionist and the truck will serve the next owner well.

Bit late to the party here!! How did the sale go?? That little Landrover is a credit to Rob, beautiful bit of workmanship, if they had known about it Carlsberg would have had it on their advertisements... sad to see you leave the classic market Rob but wish you the best for the future mate.. I knew you should have sold me that rear disk kit!!!  :tiphat

Chris, the sale hasnt happened yet, it is on the saturday of the Classic Car Show.  You can buy a discounted ticket to the show being a club member so you could come and watch and also visit the club stand

Hope you are well and thanks for the good wishes - have you fitted the disc conversion kit yet, as Peter advised the sale is not until the 11th Nov, George is the only Series 2A in the auction - so far, he's lot 109 so it's an early sale, if in fact he does sell - I really don't know how it will go only time will tell. If he does not sell he will be returned home and mothballed until who knows when as I don't want to change his condition plus I haven't got the energy to mess about any more. Yes I'm out of classic's now, just going to enjoy retirement do more fishing and messing about with the boats, plus the wife wants to travel more in the caravan so that's the plan.

As for the rear brakes - I never got an answer out of Heystee, I do see his website is back up and running but there is no stock, I'm not sure if it will ever get it sorted, only time will tell on that one.

Well it's going very close now, just had the catalogue through which gives me access to the auction, 164 vehicles being auctioned, George is on the earlier side just before lunch so not sure if that's good or bad, the only other series is a series III owned by Jamiroquai or Jay Kay so that's about it. Will he sell, I really don't know, I'm I nervous - absolutely.






I've put together a history file which contains 95% of all the invoices I have for George's re-build (not even tried to count them up - but it's a lot), surprized how many invoices I have for nuts, bolts, washers and rivets :confused



So I will see those who visit the show as I'll be around for a couple of days - certainly for Saturday.

£26,438. That's a good price. Are you happy with that?

If we assume all the mod's above and beyond standard come to £6k in costs and with labour to fit, then that would put an fine example of a restorted 88" to standard at about £20k, perhaps below as most won't be too this standard. Shall we say circa £15-20k.

What do we think?

You've always got to be careful with extras. I've broadly the same set-up. Mine's not for sale yet come the day, I don't expect to get much over what it'd be worth without its 'optional' list

Whilst Rob's option list would have cost more than £6000, I suspect a Roamerdrive/ Heystee/ 123/ ACR list adds less than 40p in the £1 to the sale price .

Dealer options never add their cost at resale. The market is 'wrong-kind-of-rivets' bone-stock, if we add 'extras' the same buyer doesn't want to pay extra for them. Or worse doesn't want them anyway. Whereas the buyer that does comes rarer and has no competition.

Sadly, all that stuff has narrower appeal.

I don't know who George went too, I do know he was sold in the room, I'm suspecting it's a collector as they have not show the VAT on the commission so the buyer could be well in with Iconic - I could be wrong, unless they make them selves known to me or on here we will never know.

I'm happy with what I received as he went for the reserve which was always my target (I have to pay a small commission and Vat which I expected).

Pricing additions is difficult when it comes to getting your money back, I will admit that checking through all the invoices including his original purchase price of £1600 (I supplied 95% of all invoices with George's doc pack) the actual total re-build of George to the standard he was cost me just over £15K which includes any labour for painting, machining of the engine and the re-build of the complete gearbox, but this was spread over a 9 year period with the bulk being spent within the first 5 years of the build. Where I have saved is the labour which I did myself, except for the ones I've just mentioned. Also I have sold off items that I no longer needed so that went back into the pot - not a great deal but it all helps.

So technically I made a profit of around £9K, but so what, he wasn't re-built to make a profit, he was re-built to help me rehabilitate after being diagnosed with Sarcoidosis of the lungs which is over 10 years ago now. He did help me recover but unfortunately the very medicine which I have to take now actually works against me so if I do a oil change it's a question who leaks the most, me of blood or George of oil. :nurse

Hopefully George as gone to a good home and just maybe the new owner will come on here as there is a big indicator on the back of George  which clearly states the series 2 club details.

I do have some more items I will be selling which I list separately shortly, things like a complete set of door hinges including mirrors in marine blue, radiator, two dizzy etc etc

I have to say it's been a pleasure being part of the club, I've enjoyed the up's and down's but I will remind all members to back the club, don't let other idiots come along who think they know best and only think that green laning and pub meets is what this club is about, it's way above that in fact these activities only account for 20 % of the club and what it stands for, just look at the reaction to the great show that was put on at the NEC this weekend - you can't get that going down a lane :RHD  therefore it's up to you, the membership, to get behind the club and kick any such change into touch.  :teacher         

So getting back to the sale, I'm pleased but sad, it looks like more fishing for me and racing around a lake with my boats, less chance of doing myself any harm I hope.

Curious, as Ex-Chairman you take a dim view on "green laning & pub meets". Granted these are not everything a classic Land Rover owner will take part in. But surely anything that feeds social engagement with like minded people is a good thing, else no one would talk to each other. You can't have a community of strangers.

I imagine fishing and boating will not involve bloody knuckles. That wil be a relief.  :cheers-man
