Ineos Grenadier (again)

Been looking at the prices, they have jumped a lot since it was introduced, starting at £76K now, getting to Defender range now. Biggest threat for them is going to come from Toyota who are just launching a new Land Cruiser which arrives in 2024 - looks a nice vehicle, one to consider as the price is more realistic.

I was talking to the owner of a new Defender this morning.  He said he bought it because, although he preferred his older Defender his bones were getting old and he had trouble with the heavy clutch. This Defender, a 2 litre electric hybrid cost £81,000. I asked what he thought of the Grenadier and he did have a look but didn't like it and it wasn't much cheaper.

I've been lucky enough to have a short drive in the Ineos at Goodwood, was pleasant enough, tackled the quarry course without sweat but still engaged you with buttons and levers. The new Defender that I drove around Eastnor was massively capable, made everything a little too easy.
I still prefer my G4 Defender, I've only driven my S2a on the road until it broke... must get around to fixing it.

I was surprised to read (Oct CLR) that the Grenadier`s speedometer is housed in a centre-mounted screen. Apparently "This means the straight-ahead view is uncluttered except for a few warning lights". I didn't know a speedometer was considered clutter.

I`ve never thought the Series 2`s with their centre-mounted displays to be user friendly or safe. Whether on motorway or B road, I think I`d rather glance down at a conventionally located speedometer.

What were the reasons they moved the dials to the in-front position on Series 3`s, would safety have been one, or USA regulations?

Admittedly, I`ve never driven the Grenadier, so maybe this speedometer thing is not really the issue I imagine it could be, just something else to get used to.

It's actually not an issue that I found. It's on the right hand side of the instrument binnacle on RHD vehicles and opposite on LHD vehicles. It's plenty close enough to see without taking your eyes off the road for any time.

Hi,

I prefer the simple dash panel on the S1 and S2s .... no unnecessary clutter ... although I have pondered on mounting that panel in front of the steering wheel.

I find that, in Barbara's Hyundai, when my hands are at the "10 to 2" position, they obscure the indicator "repeater" lamps. My apologies to others who have been confused by my apparently indicating an intention to turn, then driving straight on.

PS. The centre instrument panel is too short to cover the driver's "glove" box, and anyway, it would need "notching" to accomodate the steering column.

Perhaps a budding entrepreneur would like to make 3mm aluminium panels, to mount a speedo and rev-counter in front of the driver, leaving an empty hole in the middle panel for a loud-speaker.

Cup holders?

Paul - evidently you were at the Emergency Services Show! It's a Munro EV built in Scotland. There appears to be a lot of L316 Defender under it.

Almost as ugly as a Rivian I suppose!
It is phenomenally capable though. I read the report from somebody who trialled one for a number of UK agencies. Generally very positive if you aren't concerned about aesthetics. My continual worry about small specialist company builds is longevity of support. It's hard enough to get mainstream manufacturers to commit to their legal obligation for lifespan support.

So many great vehicles has come and gone - anybody remember the ESARCO?
