1966 109 2.25 Petrol Pickup One owner from new. Still runs!
Won't say more than its not far from here happy in a barn. We will pull it out at some point and go through it.
Not strictly a "barn find". We know its there because we put it in there about 20 years ago...! You can only find something if you've lost it in the beginning.

Spotted in Captivity.
Apparently this was discovered semi-derelict, on a Royal Estate and on orders from the then Prince Charles was refurbished by Apprentices at Lode Lane.
Spotted today parked in the petrol station at Tibshelf services. Is it a members vehicle ?
DVLA records show it as green but the MOT history shows it as cream.
Most of its MOT failures were with brake problems. No corrosion issues not even in advisories.
Have to love a LWB Station Wagon in Limestone. :essen
Are those Avon Traction Mileage tyres - in 7.00x16? If so they are not easy to find, or cheap.
The side view shows that rot in the the middle row door needs attention soon.

Betsy only green bits appear to be courtesy of the roof gutter, the paint does look reasonably fresh though.
Exile I did wonder if my eyes were playing tricks on me as they did not look like 7.50s not large enough, yet were too big to be 6.00s. I will hold my hands up and say I did not know 7.00s existed so I have learn something new.
Re door repair do the firm that supply the repair channel shown in black also provide the swaged contoured profile that goes between the door top and the diagonal back edge. Who do you recommend as stockist.
If only land rover galvanised doors bottoms as per 86/88/107/109 s1.
7:00 x 16 tyres were standard on LWB Series One LR. 7:50 x 16 only came about with S2
were 6.50 air portable and sankey or were they used on civilian factory models.
9.00 on one ton and fc.
Incidentally what width rim is required for a 9.00.

The middle row door-repair section is for a later Defender and is not completely identical to original. However it was the only repair piece I could find that had the upstands at each end.
You have to cut off the door restraint runner and weld it to the repair section.
As I said, a complete faff - especially if you have to do two doors!
Think I got them from SP Panels, but an online search will show.....

Back in my day, we had to use straight lengths of door repair section. Not the easiest job but well worth saving the original doors.
Nice to see another F-reg limestone wagon out there. Be interesting to compare with mine but I would have to fix their window wiper mechanism while I was there so they park and operate properly...

I believe they refer to it as 'urban camo', not working in this instance as we can all see it.
The additional three stripes is a mystery.
Like it or loath it someone has spent some time money and effort on doing it.
Cannot tell if its vinyl or paint. I would imagine you would be hard pressed to find another,DVLA shows it as BLUE.
Re door repair section is that the best way to buy it in straight lengths and mitre it to suit.

Mine is sitting taller than I'd like; the backend is a little taller than the front as well. The Rocky Mountain Parabolics haven't 'settled' yet even though everything but the roof, sidewalls and rear door have been attached since 2019.
In the attached pic you can see it. The wife is 5'2"/157.48cm tall.
Larry I'd expect the rear to sit a bit higher than the front. It looks better than dragging its rear end round like a knackered Pinzgauer. They do sit high those RM springs though. I think it suits it though.

It doesn't bother me as much now as it did when it was all put together. I know installing the top will lower the backend a bit as well.
The main issue though is the front propeller shaft isn't installed. When I went to install it in 2018 it was at its full extension. I was told then that the parabolics need to relax more. In 2019, with most of the body panels attached, it was still too extended to install. I was then told to drive it over bumpy terrain a bit to relax them. I did that, but still not enough. This time last year I attempted again to attach it and at that time it was a lot better, but still extended. I'm getting ready to make another attempt, hopefully it'll work this time.
On the bright side though... SWMBO is starting to insist on sidesteps. It's good when the spouse starts to insist on adding options!

We had a very nice chat they are over here on Holidays and I guess they missed their own 1965 short wheel base land rover, I think he said his name was Alex I can not remember his wifes name.

Technically we didn't find it as again it wasn't lost. We knew it was there, but could have done with a drone to track it down!

No photo but spotted today a light weight. A little later than we would perhaps want ( M reg) but all together and seemingly straightforward as a project. For anyone interested in trying to prise it out it's location is approximately 3 miles west of St Ives at Trendrine Farm ( OS ref 476 395) It can be seen by going on to the footpath which runs behind the farm from Zennor towards St Ives and is 20 feet to the left of the path immediately behind the farm buildings. It obviously hasn't moved for some time.

The Rover Social was an event held at Loseley Park in Surrey last year. I think there's another one this year at the Amberley Museum in West Sussex.
They also have a mini meet on the last Sunday of every month in midhurst, a good mix of series and defenders. This month they're planning a convoy on the way to the dunsfold open day.

A relatively late series 3.
It has neither front or rear mounted filler cap, so could be ex mod lift the seat up to access the tank or lhd.
But if lhd then heater vent would be on rh wing if fitted.

Sacrilege to drill an aerial hole in what appears to be an otherwise unmarked truck cab roof.
FWH are selectro.
Its a working vehicle, drill holes where you like! Once I had plucked up courage to drill one antenna hole in the roof of my new S3 that was it , more followed . On the other hand I would be loathed to drill one in the station wagon roof on my S1
I would drill wing top, if you had a gun to my head, definitely not my unmarked truck cab.
Try and pick up on existing fittings and brackets of them.
No radio fitted to mine so not an issue.
A hole-free truck-cab roof, that is also totally undented is probably the rarest body part you can (or cannot!) find.

Phew, I thought I was being precious on this one.
The roof on mine has no holes and is pretty close to dent free. I think because despite an early stint with first owner on a farm it was owned by the nhs for a very long time.
The dash has not been cut to fit a radio either.
The only thing that I have done to it that I regret is to remove the rope cleats at the front of the tub to fit an ifor canopy. I retained the cleats so its only 4 rivets that have been lost.
Who's this in my West London manor? (Tesco)

Apologies it's a series 3 but I thought it was interesting. Don't fancy riding in that front seat though!
Amazing how a game viewer gets from Africa to California. I don't think those game bars will be very busy in a Californian vineyard. I used to build those things for a living. What's interesting about is that most game viewers are built on RHD vehicles for Southern and East Africa. A left hand drive is a rarity.

I've just finished watching an episode of Midsomer Murders (yes, sad maybe), made in 2005, which features a 1971 109 2A pickup, CHT 898J, fitted with Defender door mirrors. DVLA records show it as currently taxed.
I wonder if it belongs to a club member or is known to the club.

Wow, you are correct! Good people, very patient with my petrol leaf blower which I could never start. Took it to them about 5 times to start if for me. On this occasion they did a full carb rebuild and now it starts well. They told me how to use the choke! I reminded them I've owned a petrol 1964 Land Rover for 25 years

Spotted this morning in a car park in town a pale green 2000 SWB Defender W5 HUE.
In an episode of Midsomer Murders I've just finished watching (yes, I know) was a Series 3 "County" truck cab with a safari roof on the cab. It had obviously been converted from a Station Wagon as it still bore the county stripes.
Looks a bit odd. Registration number illegible unfortunately but it must have been originally a late brown one.

Spotted on last night's 'Out of town' (talking Pictures Freeview channel 82) interesting double rear windows and door mounted mirrors. The DVLA tax checker isn't working at present - so can't check if it's still on the road. YBL273.
Apparently it's an untaxed red 1961 3300cc Land Rover. Last V5 issued in 1992.

A nice looking P5B in amongst them.
Apparently recovery not viable due to potential further collapse. ☹️

I heard locally about that shocking culprit with the steam-roller.
Apparently the Suffolk Police wanted to book him, and so gave chase.
But they couldn't keep up with him, on their bikes.
So, further along the road they threw a "stinger" across the road, to stop him.
For some reason, that didn't end well either.

The rules are different for road locomotives, steam rollers etc. You can tow more trailers (3 for a road loco not including any water bowser) and the braking mechanisms can be minimal or hand operated emergency brakes only (remember in the case of steam rollers they often have a maximum speed < 10mph - many single speed road rollers will struggle to do 8mph flat out - they are not really designed to travel distances under their own steam which is why every local council used to either own one or have a contract with a local firm. For this purpose an A frame is perfectly acceptable in my opinion (and it's pretty common to tow a land rover or similar behind your steam engine). Even a "fast" road locomotive will do only circa 20-25mph flat out, and at that speed would be stopping to refuel frequently, and be hard work over long distances.
Remember steam engines only have very rudimentary brakes themselves, typically a large wooden block operating on the inside rim of the rear wheel via a screw threaded mechanism which take many turns to wind on/off. It's really more of a parking brake. If you really want to stop in a hurry you slam the reverser into to full reverse, thus reversing the flow of steam into the piston(s). This is only recommended in an emergency if you are travelling however as a) it's possible to bend something expensively and b) the steel wheels (or solid rubber if you are posh) are likely to slip on the road surface.
Bottom line - never get in the way of steam road vehicle you will _always_ lose but you should have plenty of time to get out of the way!

Did it myself many times. Due to circumstances I had to move a Range Rover Diesel with my SWB Transit Petrol. Now, that I do not recommend !

I've lost the link but spotted on t'net was a 6x6 Series 2A with a very interesting bonnet arrangement.
The whole front end tilted forward ! great for access.

He is mostly into restoring military stuff [tanks/apv/foden etc including some in collaboration with the Tank Museum] but he has oddball episodes with other heavy equipment.
He had the 6 wheeler on a few days ago.
He also has recently had 2 episodes on a barn find 2A stationwagon with a MAD, MAD conversion to a Jenson V8.
What made me green with envy was not the mad conversion but the apparent almost perfect body work with regards to the minimal rust. Chassis looked crusty but it could have been just flaky underseal

The issue is the unbraked weight exceeding the legal 750kg. No idea if different rules apply to traction engines, but general A frame towing behind a van or car is a no no unless you can somehow operate the brakes on the vehicle under tow.
