I can't find any pictures of chromed centre plates anywhere but my March '58 plate appears to have been chromed with the back then painted black for protection? So I'm now in a quandry as to what finish to use?

Worf

Mine was chromed but then painted black. Think that was normally the case.

Is it not also a black crinkle finish on the outside ?

JohnR2

No, it's a bit crusty on the outer edge of the rear but it is the remains of the smooth satin black the whole rear was painted.

Ok, that's interesting, I wonder why they were chromed first?

Maybe Land Rover sourced the steering wheel (and boss) from a parts supplier who supply to saloon cars ???
Land Rover didn't make these parts.

When fitted they found that there was annoying glare from the sun  :cool
So they painted them black.

I can't think that paint would stick to chrome better than primed metal.

A crackle paint finish looks good ...  :gold-cup

... and easy to do if you follow the instructions on the can.

Mine was rusted chrome also, I painted it with the same paint color as my body work.
