I have a feeling this thread has been worked to the limit and seems to be a subject which has been covered as infinitum...

Bottom line is we all know that to use old tyres is a potential safety concern. The OP asked how to work out how old they were, while clearly aware that they are old stock. Currently the law in the UK does not prohibit the use of old tyres on passenger vehicles, so that is irrelevant. Perhaps it should, but it does not. Presumably therefore the DVSA do not regard this as an issue or high potential risk compared to commercials, coaches and buses where there are strict rules.

Therefore as it stands, if the OP chooses to buy these tyres, a tyre fitter deems them ok and there are no cracks and bulges, currently there is no issue. At your own risk and all that.

Probably best if we lock this thread now and see what other interesting things are going on in the world.

Hi Geoff,
I agree, but aren't you being a little harsh about my Vox Populi? Translated it means "Voice Of The People" and I used it to demonstrate the apparent success of the very petition that you had recommended at the start of this topic, after all, a petition is a Voice Of The People.

And the outcry you refer to, "They " have been embarrassed and shocked at the outcry over 20 mph", is actually the Vox Populi that you now appear to be rubbishing, surely not?  ;)

Life, like driving, is full of risk, and wouldn`t life be bloody dull without some. Should we ban mountain climbing because someone might fall & get hurt or ban Rugby, a hard fought & physically demanding sport, and those who choose to play it, know the risks, so the last thing they want is some busybody intellectual telling them they can`t play it anymore.

But unlike sport, vehicles and speed are an integral part of all our lives and the, albeit unintended, consequences of interfering in it, are very real. Many of those consequences have been listed in other posts. 

Call it empire/legacy building, but politicians are all too often influenced by minority groups e.g. the Ramblers assoc who want to stop us using Greenlane's (read Green Roads). And although I`m not against very specific and targeted speed reduction areas, for example outside of schools, I`m pleased this 20 mph scheme appears to have been a spectacular failure.

For some reason we're lax on tyre dates in this country. Most of Europe has a 5YO tyre as illegal. Europe is where your local 'Part-worn' dealer gets their stock.

It's simple, a tyre has its DOT code or they're 25 years old minimum. Suited to showground-miles or best of all, scrap.

DOT format is 4-digit. Thus '2321' where 23 is the 23rd 'week in the year'; 21 the year.

Only, Facts are Evil. Thus £50 says they'll get used anyway.

There is some near me who has a set of hoops, not the shark teeth or other bracing bits. Canvas is the poly sort not canvas, but as you say, it may be worth it for the hoops alone.

Our 59 SWB came to us in 1963 and so likely has its original bumper, there is no escutcheon on that either

Would the GS versions have flaps in the tilts even though they weren't fitted for radio?

The bumper on my 1959 built 109", when I first acquired it, was likely the original. That didn't have a reinforcement plate or I would have kept it as I have always quite liked it as an example of how engineers designed the Series 1.

UAA392 the third home market 88" restored by Dunsfold has standard series 2 bumper with no escutcheon.
Looking through James Taylor's Series 2 & 2a Specification Guide none of the pictures have bumpers with escutcheons.
I still think series 1 and 11 dumbions are different therefore it's possible to fit S2 bumper to a S1 but not visa Verda. Unfortunately my Series 1 is not here at present to measure.
