My gut feel said it is possible. I know both 17H and 2.5 NA have the same block/ crank etc. Same part numbers. Next 3MB petrol rebuild, grab an easy to find 2.5NA dieseasel. They go for the prices 'a used petrol' sold for back when... £150-200.  With the two, see a 2.5/2.8.
