Swivel gaiter kits; rubber or leather?

My guess is that LR do not do them any more. Allmakes also list the same part (276594) as a genuine item, but I bet that were I to try and order one, it would be rejected.

Most of these suppliers draw a standard price file from their distributor and I know that there are literally thousands of lines on the LR parts files which although there, are actually obsolete. I can't see how or why there could possibly be a JLR interest in retaining this line as a Genuine Part. I may well be proven wrong though!

Note that that line is cheaper from Paddock and even cheaper with your LRS2C discount.

Can't see any advantage in having a "genuine" Land Rover part for a swivel gaiter - it's not as if it would be stamped "Land Rover" and the part number  :confused

It's just a piece of leather at the end of the day.

Thanks I will try Paddocks.

Paddocks have a set £23 for + postage. It looks a different material though it says leather. It is a sand colour where LR supermarket is a blue/grey colour.
Is discount code in B2L ?

Wittsend

Yes, summer B2L page 54.

Also on the website in the members only section.

So the Swivel kits are £27 at Paddocks including Postage, but I can collect from LR Supermarket at £23.
So unless anyone knows of Paddocks item being better I will do that.
I looked at JLR Classic Parts and as suspected they are not available.

Ah, now ye have little faith. Me? I'm a stickler for main-dealer light-bulbs.

On another forum I inhabit, they insist on 'our' marque's branded ATF and antifreeze; and when others tell them 'our' particular grade of ATF was until recent, only made in one plant in Europe, they'd still insist on 4x the price for main-dealer ATF... "You can't be too sure".

Makes you wonder who they think makes oil?

Billy

I replaced the leather gaiters and seals on my 1965 88 MOD about ten years ago. Still has the original chrome balls, does not loose any oil between services. Leather gaiters from new.

I'm not sure what else there is to add? I started this thread with near insistence on some form of rubber creation. It is clear this is a daft idea. Good reason was given. End of.

Do the seam up with zip-ties, these allow inspection. Leather is cheap, works, lasts.

On my search I did come across a couple of 'rubber' variants, both around £50. One was described as Neoprene the other Rubber 'new ex-Military'. Though the impression I get from reading the forum was that Military had Leather gaiter's ?
I did like the idea of making my own from the template but as I have a bad habit of putting things off that could take some time.
So I plan to head to LRSupermarket and pick up a set of the grey/blue 'leather' ones for £23  :confused

"New ex-military" could well be for modern stuff like Wolfs and Defenders ???

Series MoD vehicles would have had leather gaiters from the factory.

TBH can't see any advantage of rubber over the OE leather gaiters.

I don't recall using gaiters on coil sprung vehicles. In testing we went for the upgraded coated swivels rather than chrome and it was far more durable.

Slightly off topic, but the coated swivels are available for later vehicles - does anybody know if they are available for Series vehicles? I've not seen any...

Something that is occasionally asked is "Can the swivels be re-chromed and by whom ?"

In this H&S age chroming is becoming harder and harder to do and I believe the regs are being tightened up again  :shakinghead
Good quality bright chroming is more and more difficult as new restrictions on the chemicals/processing come into force.

So the next question that crops up is "Can the swivels be Teflon coated and by whom ?"

Teflon coating is I believe the modern treatment diffwhine refers to ???

Sorry already posted this.

Correct Alan - its the standard finish on Defender swivels.
