Hi,fitted Britpart starter to get me going much noisier than the Lucas one, makes a fair howl.
Is this normal.

Shouldn't howl... Might be worth dropping an email to Britpart and ask them why yours is so noisy. If its unacceptably noisy, throw it back at them.

Last time i changed a starter in a Land Rover was about 20 years ago, back then Genuine parts were readily available, just seems a very loud amplified starter noise if you know what i mean.
Car has been laid up for last 5 years and only recently started, although been turned over with handle.

Hi,

My first thought was ... why does it take so long enough to start, that a howl can develop. Surely an S2 should start on the first 180 degrees?

Second thought was ... Does it make any difference if you prime the carb (using lever on fuel pump) before trying to start?

Have you tried spinning the starter from under the bonnet, so that your ears are closer to the starter motor? Me? I would ensure the engine cannot start, if necessary by removing the coil "king" lead. It may be that your new starter IS spinning at "howling" speeds, compared with the old starter. Thoughts of the original gearbox Earth strap being missing from the original set up, or WHY?

So ... is the starter howling because it IS turning fast? Or because there is
mechanical interference, or what have you?

Possibly OT, but my last S2 which had a later diesel engine, howled until I replaced the starter button. When I went to replace the pre-engaged starter.... I found the starter was not disengaging when I took my finger off the pathetic, aftermarket, START button. Fitted by a previous owner, it was making permanent contact while the "ignition" was switched ON. Nothing wrong with the starter itself. I managed to cobble an S3 (I think) steering lock assembly onto the S2 column ... although I had to hit the locking "sprag" with an angle grinder, as there was no "sprag hole" in S2 column.
