I noticed mine is one of the big pictures, I remember when I put the image, there was no size requirement. so I am guessing whoever set their image before that, has the big image.

I'll make mine small too if it lets me now, fit in with the rest

You'll have to experiment.

We don't want massively large avatars as they distract from what's on the screen. On the other hand we need to see the detail. The "trick" is a balance between the two and choosing an image that looks good and clear when scaled down.
Photoshop is your friend.

Even if Photoshop is your friend, not all of us use it, there is a size limit.  Is the limit adjustable?
