1963 SWB diesel 2.25 …?

Been absent for a long time but delighted to be back in my shed and more involved again in the restoration of a 1963 SWB diesel. The club and forum have proved a great source of info and inspiration on my restoration journey - and I'm back now to hopefully tap in to the collective knowledge.
All the serialised components appear to match the year, so I'm eager to keep the project as original as is possible (practical). I have a rolling chassis at this stage and I am tackling the engine and gearbox at present. After an engine strip down the block, which is in good condition appears to have wet liners which with my limited knowledge was not a feature of the 2.25 but of the earlier 2.0L diesel.
The engine serial plate shows 2760673/3 K0866 which I have noted from previous research is a factory rebuilt kit. Pic below..

This SWB, I believe is an CKD import to Ireland.
I'm wondering now what direction to go in as regards engine overhaul and what parts to get - could this be a rebuilt 2.0L diesel or would a 2.25 have been rebuilt maybe at a later date and wet liners added ..?
I'm told it needs 4 kit sets (wet liners), main bearings .20, con rod bearings .20 (big ends) set of thrust washers - oil and water pump, timing chain kit and front crankshaft pulley.
Any info or pointers would be appreciated ..

Sounds like a bit of a major overhaul of your engine then. There are plenty on here who have rebuilt 2.0l diesels but I can't say I'm one of them.

What I am intrigued about is your CKD comment about Ireland. I grew up there and any LR south of the border was a real rarity. I'm not aware of any LR assembly operation in Eire.

What's the chassis number?

Hi Diffwhine,

It was first registered in Ireland in May 63, with various component serial numbers dating to 1962. Chassis no. 27300082a. It was suggested to me that it was assembled in Lincoln and Nolan, Baggot St. Dublin - but I have no paperwork to support this.
But it has been in the country since 1963 ..

Hi Steven,

I was able to take a look. Yours is indeed a CKD Landie, built and sent to Eire on 4 Jan 1963.

21 RHD CKD diesel 88" were sent in total to a company called Motor Packing Ireland. Motor Packing was the name of a shipping company that used to transport Land Rovers to various far flung global destinations, including the Philippines, Costa Rica and South Africa. Another company called Export Packing handled other destinations, including Morocco, Chile, NZ and Rhodesia.

Only 294 RHD CKD diesel 88"s were built and the very last one also went to Ireland, in November 1964.

Thanks James for looking that up - it's great to have a bit more definitive info for my vehicle. Fingers crossed that soon a Heritage cert or equivalent is available for CKDs ... your time is much appreciated. I've also found a list of sequenced engine numbers which says that those starting with 276......... denote a 2.25L diesel.

No worries. Yes 276 is a IIa diesel number, although we have very few in the database, so I can't really help with dating.

The Heritage Certificate is produced by Richard (lovely chap, who gives me library access at Gaydon) and uses the same information.

Are you sure its a wet liner not a dry liner , which was available for a 2.25 L  to bring back to standard bore . The bore would tell which size engine .3.375" is 2 litre and 3.562" is 2.25 L

Re the liners, no I'm not sure - but now that I'm happy that it's a 2.25L I'll go back to the machine shop and quiz them on that. It would make more sense if they were dry liners that were fitted on tha previous rebuild. Thanks for the info and bore dimensions ...

Yep ... thanks to James (and Richard) I have even more info now. And yes by all means get in touch when you're next coming over I'm Dublin based and I'd be delighted to show you the project - which will hopefully start moving a little quicker over the next while ...
