Thanks for the info so far. Discovered that my original gearbox was rebuilt by Land Rover proper. A brass plate is riveted to the bell housing. Is this unusual?
It looks a mess, but I'm thinking that all the major internal components may be ok - so what to do?

The plate looks to be in the correct place for a Rover rebuilt box , not an unusual occurrence

May be ok ?

Crikey Moses !

Land Rover haven't rebuilt gearboxes for quite some decades now so a brass plate doesn't mean anything other than it being a curio !

What to do ?

Strip and inspect and respond accordingly, hopefully all will be reasonable but the truth is it all depends on previous owners and their usage of the vehicle.

I have a factory rebuilt unit in my one too, mine must be a later one as the plate is a printed aluminium plate, not brass. The part number on my one appears on this list but yours doesn't. I assume it's a simple, like for like rebuilt 2A box?
The part number on my one is 607125RR and as far as I know it was fitted sometime in the 1970's by Dunsfold Land Rovers.
