Hi, in this age of total distrust of (some) of our fellow human beings, is there an easy way to lock the bonnet without making drastic alterations. Look forward to your suggestions.
Thanks
Gary

There is an accessory latch and staple available. Watch out though - its a different one for the differing bonnet types.

Its in the optional equipment catalogue in the website technical section.

From the Optional Extras catalogue ...

I didn't have the Official LR kit. I made my own using a cardboard template to bend a hasp into shape. and then riveted it into place ....

For the turnbuckle part, I modified one of my standard seat box turnbuckles, removed the centre "bolt" and welded in a longer bolt (1/4" UNF, probably 1.5" with the threads cut off) to clear the thickness of the rad grille. Then ground the bolt head round and then a spray of silver paint.

Talking of theft - not a bad idea to fix one the grille - seeing what Maltese Cross grilles fetch these days  :shakinghead

One disadvantage of having a bonnet lock is that if there were a problem in the engine bay, fire/smoke it's going to take a few extra seconds to get the key and remove the lock - balanced against the risk of theft.

And here is the same thing for the chunkier, deluxe bonnet.

The holes for mine were already drilled by the previous owner or Dunsfold Land Rovers that used to look after it for him. The holes in the bonnet were  drilled for small rivets but I decided to tap them then countersink the lock hasp and screw it into place. Not sure why, seemed a good idea at the time....

The turnbuckle is a tricky thing to drill however avoiding the radiator support / bonnet lock shelf on the inside of the grille panel. Two of the nuts on the inside of this one are very close to the steel making fitting a bit tricky.

Off course the lock is only as good as the padlock on it. With a lever, anyone could snap the turnbuckle or break the padlock in seconds but it's a small deterrent I guess.

Going on from Alan's comment above. I have a battery isolator thing on the negative battery terminal. I always undo that when leaving the vehicle so that is when I apply the padlock. When I screw the isolator back down to start the engine, I take the padlock inside with me. i.e. I never drive with the padlock on the bonnet.

Mine has a razor edge bonnet with a modified delux bonnet hap which is welded to the bonnet frame

I always leave my bonnet lock unlocked when I'm driving so if there is a problem there's quick(ish) access. When parked  I close the padlock, and unlock it before I drive off.

I got a genuine hasp and staple kit back when I first bought my Land-Rover. After much thought I decided not to fit it because I didn't want to cut the grille, or drill the front panel, and I figured that the only person it was ever going to inconvenience was me.

It's somewhere in the stores. If I can find it I'll post it in the for sale section.
