Tailgate catch

Is the tail gate catch cast iron? I am struggling trying to weld it?

No steel, have you ground off the galvanising (ZINC) where you are welding, its important and don't breather the fumes

I thought I had cleaned the galve off. Probably needs more cleaning.

Why are you welding it? Many about as spares.

At the rally in Fakenham I was impressed with a set of hinges made by Purley metal that allow the tailgate to be swung open or dropped down.
I have decided to try and make a set but using the original 3 hole hinge and the thicker tailgate catch
