LVU The Whippet Wagon

Hi everyone, greetings from East Yorkshire. I just wanted to drop in and say hello. I have recently purchased my first landy, it's a series 2a hardtop (I will try to upload a photo here)

I visited the stand at the NEC on Friday was really impressed with it and James was very helpful with my "newbie" questions so it made sense for me to join the club.

It looks like he has got plenty to keep him busy with his GPO rebuild!

No doubt I will be poping up here and there with a few random questions. My first job is to track down a heater for it.

Cheers and best regards, WhippetWagon (aka Adam)

East Yorkshire is a big area.  Can tou be a bit more specific?

Hi Peter,

Yes, it's a fairly large county. I'm near Goole.

The P registration letter was used for vehicles registered between August 1, 1975 and July 31, 1976.

With your bumperettes and the lights in the grille rather suggests your vehicle is ex-MoD built between 1965 (September) to 1966 (August). It was common MoD practice to sell off their vehicles after 10 years service. Therefore it would have been 1st registered  for road use in 1976 ish – hence the P-plate.

You need to check what build date you have on the V5C registration document.
Peter, our VRO can advise on how to get the V5C changed.

As an ex-MoD vehicle it would not have had a heater fitted. Pre 1967 models had the Smiths round heater. Good 2nd ones are about. Clayton make a very good round heater. Many were retro fitted with Clayton heaters as heaters were an optional extra at that time.

Hi Wittsend,

Thanks for the details. The log book does have a "declared manufactured 1967" typed on it in the section at the bottom so I think it's ok from that point.

It does have the ducting and screen nozzles in place. It also has the two "pipe" holes in the bulkhead and three smaller holes....so I think it would have be a Smith's unit once upon a time??

I have just found one on the ol'ebay so I shall see what it's like when it arrives here (might need a bit of fettling).

Cheers 👍

Has the bonnet got a secret locking arrangement ?

Looks like the normal bonnet catch is there, just a bit more of a fiddle to reach with the military grill(no cut out). Looking at the pics from the Mathiesons auction I don't think it's ex mil. Certainly the front bumper and grill are. I can't see anything else that would suggest it's a rover 8 or if post '67 a rover 10.

Uffddd

The dash on the auction pictures looks fairly ex mil with the extra panels and no hole in the middle for the ignition key barrel.

I'd say that it's not got its original bonnet or wings though if it was.

Welcome Adam,
I'm glad you had a good time at the NEC on Friday. I think we all had a good time. I think I may have met you on the stand now I think of it.
The Land Rover looks great. It would be interesting to work out its origins as some are trying to do, but it doesn't really matter as long as it's sound and fun.

Feel free to throw questions out on here. There is no such thing as a bad question, and there's plenty of knowledge on here along with plenty of reference material on the club's website. Above all, enjoy the ride...!

Welcome to the club. Everybody on this forum is really helpful and there is an abundance of experience on which to draw, should you have any questions. Believe me, there is no such thing as a daft one (well maybe one or two).
