I have just bought Defender tubeless wheels so that I can fit decent radial tyres to my Series 2a. The wheels have a date stamp of 13 12 on the front. Stamped on the back is what I thought was a part number of 1011117. Having Googled the number I can find nothing to shed light the spec for this wheel. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Hi,

Just a thought (for starters) .....

...... 10th November 2017?

I assume that your wheels are "steel slots"? I doubt that alloys would be an easy swap. Also, be aware that 88" and 109" wheels have different rim widths. I always tried to fit 205s (I think 80 profile) tyres, on 109" wheels, to my 88" Series. They fill the wheel arch more convincingly.

The long number might be the wheel manufacturer's part number.

Conventionally, a Defender standard wheel rim should have the part number stamped on the front, not the rear. The rear number could be a batch number or as Alan Drover suggests a manufacturer's part number. Never seen that before though. Is there definitely no other number on the front of the wheel rim? Maybe late production rims came from a different source to previous ones. Many of the original ones came with Dunlop stamps on them.

Definitely no other numbers. Four are stamped '13 12' and one is '27 12'. I think the date will indeed be in 2012 as I was told that they came off a 2013 Defender 110. They are 5½" wide compared to my original 5" SWB wheels.

You may need to fit the later 2a wheel nuts which will sit in the countersunk hole in the wheel more securely.

Have you looked on the inside well of the rim, part numbers etc often stamped there

The tubeless part number is stamped on the rim lip, on the opposite side of where the tyre sits. It will start something like 'RRC' I think.

I took a wire brush to the inside rim and found "MADE IN ITALY 1011119" then a feint 2 and 0 followed by what looks like 2210994. I wonder if the 1011119 is a manufacturer's part number for the rim as the wheel centre has 1011117 which could be the part number for the centre.

Is there any pcd or bcd data stamped on them?

BradfordS2

The part number is here. I don't have a pic to hand but the last part of the info of which the part number is included can just be seen on this picture.

The dish look unusual in that picture.

I think it's just the perspective of the angle the picture was taken from. Same wheels fitted here, they look more 'normal'.

Had a closer look among the dirt and rust and found info on the outer rim after all...

Spot on! Those wheel nuts (Part No 576103) have the 9/16" BSF thread but are 27mm across the flats. This is the same width as the M16 nuts used on the Series 2A from suffix H, Series 3 and Defender. Seems an ideal solution for seating the Defender wheels on the narrower studs.
