I've seen different headlamp arrangements and was wondering whether the headlamps flush with the grille panel were the early version followed by the more protruding type with chrome rims? Also whether it's possible to fit the more recessed ones in with a V8?

The other way round John, the ones with chrome rings are S2 and early 2A

As mentioned by Peter above, the more flush to the panel headlights were the later style and they ran up to the point where the lights migrated to the wings. Not sure when the change over was from the chrome ring versions to the recessed ones but, the photos below are my April 67 IIA

They should all fit with a V8 but it depends what you intend to do with regards the radiator. If you retain the original radiator in the standard position then no problem with either lights. When I fitted a V8 in a series 3 however I moved the radiator forward so it sat above the crossmember and used a reduced width Land Rover 110 V8 radiator. That gave a lot more room under the bonnet for the SD1 V8 I was using.
