I think it was in "The Dambusters" film where a Series 1 made a brief appearance.

That's a great film. We watched the Longest Day last night, as we thought it was more fitting for the occasion. You forget the incidental details. My favourite fact is that Richard Todd was actually at Pegasus Bridge and in the film played his commanding officer, Major Howard. It must surely have been one of the most accurate scenes with him to advise.

What did my father do in the War ... a different story.

Being a steam enthusiast, he wanted to join the navy, but as an engineer, he was needed to train young engineers, and was sent to the Government Training Centre in Waddon, near Croydon, (where forty years later, I learned to be a draughtsman). Following an altercation with management, about nipping across the road for a packet of fags ("You can't stop me going out, that is what we are fighting a war for, but you can't stop me coming back in.) He stormed out, and went home.

He returned to work the following morning, to collect his tools, and was yanked in front of "Management", who begged him to stay. He suggested that they "went fourth and multiplied".

On arriving home the following evening, he phoned his brother-ito be a Supn-law, something big in the Trade Unions, who phoned Stafford Cripps (Minister for Aircraft Production), who arranged for Dad to be a supervisor at Handley Page, making HALIFAX bombers.

Dad told me that the Halifax was precision built, while the Lancaster was sort of thrown together ... but the Lancaster was by far the better aircraft.

What did I do in the War? I shot down Doodlebugs (AKA V1s) with my toy Tommy gun.

My dad started writing his memories of growing up in Liverpool during the war. Heavily bombed. I must get him to finish them. He was 14 at the end so can recall details well.

Not quite what my Dad did in the war, but he DID try to enlist.

As an engineer, he was required elsewhere, and was directed to the Government Training Centre in Stafford Road in Croydon, training would be engineers.

One day he nipped out, to buy some pipe tobacco. The gate keeper grabbed him when he returned, told him to report to the Manager's office.

Doh! My ladies have arrived, told me dinner is ready. Dreadful sense of timing, those ladies.
