Oil/Water Gauge Brackets

Ordered bracket for thermal pipe to secure it. What turned up today does not look like what is pictured in parts book.
Had a eureka moment and looked in box with odd bits that came with the car.
The part on the left is the new part 279861 and the right is the bit I came across today.
Has anyone fitted these is one diesel and one petrol.

Item 10 shown in your diagram is listed as for the Diesel version - pn : 279783

They are one and the same part

The Series One Petrol doesn't have a bracket

The Series 2 Petrol bracket pn : 279861 must be the one you ordered

Where did you purchase it from ?

This was ordered from Blanchards as part 279861 listed for 2-1/4 petrol.
Very confusing as totally different or wrong part maybe.

^^ I take it the purpose made capilliary tube is a later addition ?

Did the vehicle have the dual gauge originally and if so can you see where the original bracket holes are ?

Reason I ask is if you can it would indicate which bracket was originally fitted.

Geoff, my Series 2 - 1958 - 2 Litre Diesel with Factory or Dealer Fitted with Combined Jaeger Water & Oil Gauge Has Purpose Made short Water Temperature Capillary Tube to rear Cylinder Head So no coiling of the Capillary Tube is needed - Given the condition of the Dual Gauge and paint matching the dash I don't believe the Jaeger Dual Water Oil Gauge has ever been replaced.   

So maybe the later on Land Rover Standardised the Water Capillary tube to fit both Diesel and Petrol Models.

Mine obviously was part of a kit fitted by a PO with not all bits used. Its not something i had particularly noticed until i was looking and ordering hoses for the heater.
Would need someone with a factory fitted vehicle with all bits fitted to know what is correct.

Indeed it is all a bit vague in the Parts Catalogue and also in the Workshop Manual.
I looked at a First Edition of both the above books and also at a few later versions and the fog won't clear unfortunately.

The correct bracket was first supplied as standard with the kit for the 2lt Diesel engine - when gauges branded "Land Rover"were introduced.

This was at a time when the petrol engine was also 2 litre which had its inlet at the front of the engine, and thus required a longer capilliary wire.

The Land Rover gauge had wire long enough for 2 litre petrol engines (which also allowed retro-fitting to earlier Series One petrol vehicles) but too long for the diesel, hence the supply of the bracket for the surplus wire, on diesel vehicles.

What year were Land Rover Branded Combined Water & Oil Gauges Introduced?

As See the attached photo of my Series 2 - 1958 - 2 Litre Diesel with Factory or Dealer Fitted with Combined Jaeger Water & Oil Gauge Has Purpose Made short Water Temperature Capillary Tube to rear Cylinder Head So no coiling of the Capillary Tube is needed.   All the Jaeger Gauges match as does the dash paint.

All my other original 2 litre Diesel Combined Water & Oil Gauges are also branded Jaeger.

That's interesting.
I was going to remove mine to check it's working properly seems to read low when at running temp.
Maybe the thermostat.
Will check the routing of the thermal pipe,not much extra pipe left on mine.

That is a good question.

It is not a precise science, but from observation over the years, I would say fairly soon after the introduction of the SII (but not necessarily at the same time).

This is logical - because the 2lt diesel, needing the shorter wire, had been out for nearly a year in the SI - and the 2.25 engine, also needing a shorter wire - had been in development for a while and would soon be fitted to all petrol Land Rovers.

At the same time there were still SI's and SII's with the 2 litre petrol engine, to which owners might want to (retro)fit a gauge. So it made sense to produce a gauge that coud be used for both.

The Land Rover gauge has a shorter wire than most of the generic ones I have seen, which are much longer in order to fit a range of vehicles rather than be vehicle-specific.
 
You have an extremely short wire to your engine, however I am wondering if the Dealer could have done this (or had it done), as I imagine there might not be a huge market for the gauge manufacturer, for gauges with such a short wire.


However, I caveat this with the knowledge that every day is a schoolday!

Would be interesting if someone has bought a complete kit. I assume there would be fitting instructions with the routing of the pipes and location of brackets for both engines.
