Anybody Recognise This Battery Tray?

I Need to replace the bodge job on my battery tray.  It currently consists of a bent length of angle iron crudely welded onto the chassis support.

I have this tray as a replacement but it has an extended flat shelf.  I am considering cutting the shelf area off leaving the tray, which is the correct size.

Before I do this, am I ruining a rare item? If so I'll sell this on and buy another tray.

Thanks.

Looks exactly the same as mine, 1968 2a.

Mine (1964 109") looks roughly the same, but without the tray. The image in the Parts Catalogue (p. 226, below) doesn't seem to show the tray either. But it's not perfectly clear...

The tray was added to the later ones to give some protection to the horn when it was relocated to behind the grille. My 68 has the same one as pictured.
The old days are the old days only because there're gone and won't be back.

My April 67 IIA has the shelf as well.
I heard the shelf was to prevent the horn which is mounted above the shelf jamming the steering in place if the mounting brackets should come loose and the horn dropped off.
Equally though, the horn is positioned above the shelf facing downwards and the shelf would help protect it from water spray being directed into the horn.

If the shelf isn't in the way, why remove it, leave it be?

Thanks for the replies.

Mine's a 1961 88inch S2. What's left of the original in situ, doesn't have the shelf. The only practical issue I can see is that the shelf prevents access to the steering arm and joints without removing the wing.

I'll give it a go with the shelf in place.

Thanks again.

Looks like a handy place to put something useful,a small jack ,tool box, vacuum reserve for a diesel, oil can or spare water or even hydraulic oil .
It is an interesting item ,does it look like it has been made whole as one item ?

The shelf is welded onto the front of the battery tray.
The headlight is right above it and the battery sits right behind it so not much room for anything in there really.
