Adding Value

Hi, not long ago I picked up my first series 2, a 1967 SWB 2a. I'm slowly working through previous owners bodges and making it safe for the road, some of which I may post about in another post. My question is, it's been fitted at some point with a 300Tdi. Great engine don't get me wrong but I'd like to go back to petrol. Forget economy, it's a weekend fun car not an everyday hack. Adding future value to the vehicle is also something I've contemplated. So do I go out and find a 3mb 2.25 petrol which it originally came with or do I fit a 3.5 V8 on SUs as a classic period mod?
I'm sending away the gearbox to be rebuilt and renewed most of suspension and braking system before anyone starts worrying.

You'll add the "most" value by returning it to factory spec with a 2¼ petrol.

If you're contemplating fitting a V8  :thud then why bother with the extra expense and just keep with the 300Tdi  ???
V8 power appeals to a limited market. A punchy, economical 300Tdi is a bit more attractive to punters, whilst a standard spec vehicle will command top money and appeal to more buyers.

Not sure it would add value to be honest.

Some people will be looking for an original vehicle and won't buy your one with the TDI. Other people however want a TDI and wouldn't look at your one if it had a 2286 petrol in it.

Whatever you do, it won't really be back to original unless you have the engine that was originally removed.

I like the 2286 petrol engine. It's quiet, smooth and suits the vehicle well. I've done the V8 thing in the past, fun at the time, wouldn't do it again though.

Your choice, better to make the vehicle you want rather than worrying about selling it at some point in the future.

Craig.

The only thing to avoid, is spend a lot of money to make it worth less.

Mine is worth significantly more than when it came to me and when the original IOE engine is refitted it will be worth more but that is not the object of the exercise.  I use it regularly 2or 3 days each week and I go away several times per year green laning.  I just use it and I don't nurse it

I'd just build the truck you want.
If the work is good, chances are someone will want the same thing further down the line. Take lots of pictures of the work, use good parts and don't paint the windows and it should be grand.
