Having experienced a vehicle fire on the motorway with our motorhome(caused by something in the engine compartment) our normal sized fire extinguishers are of very limited use.  Tha isn't stopped me from having one in the cab and one in the kitchen area in its replacement vehicle.

The mess they make is a very very secondary consideration when faced with a fire.

Yeah, I understand that Peter. When petrol vapour did its initial WHUFF there really wasn't a lot to do except self preservation. Diesel is a different story.

Here's an informative summary. Based on that info I'd be inclined to choose water mist... I now have a small powder type extinguisher mounted to the bulkhead, underneath the dash, but it's old – it was there when I bought the Land Rover, some 8 years ago. This thread does raise awareness of the fire risk. For me at least. If you've experienced a fire, like Peter or Mark for instance, your'e already aware I guess...

The trouble is with a fire, you don't have the luxury to know what started it at the time, so grabbing the correct extinguisher for the correct fire Is a gamble, so powder will do them all, ok it's a mess, but that's why you have insurance, they can clean it up! The important thing is to save lives, and save the car and stop it spreading.
