Hard top leaks - just where does the water come in?!

I worked for SWEB as a Linesman in the 80's, when raining, we drove in a full set of waterproofs.
The heavy wooden ladders on the roofs of our Series Land Rovers did not help things.
The worst thing was braking with the internal gutter full.
Quite often a stream of water down the back of the neck.
