Would I be correct in saying that the correct grill would be the one that doesn't have a hole in it for the bonnet catch, my 1970 series 2a 109 ex military has the bonnet catches, or does it not really matter, thanks

Yours should have a Maltese cross grill  on the late 70/71 I've seen they all had hole for bonnet opening.

12V military Series 2s and very early 2As had a cut out same as on civilian models, and no bonnet catches. The catches and a full grill without the cut out hole only came with the introduction of 24V FFR models. Eventually the WD realised that converting these early 12V models to 24V models and retaining the bonnet lever setup would prove difficult to reach by hand (24V models had a toastie grill), so the catches on wings became a permanent feature.

A 1970 model should have a Maltese grill. From all in service pictures I have of these later Rover 10/11s they all have a hole in their Maltese grill same as on civilian models.
