Are these trailers any good, I am looking to get one and think they are a nice combination to have but not sure if they are non fashionable now as prices seem to be dropping, thanks

The original Sankey (narrow track) is a brilliant work-horse trailer  :gold-cup
They tow well.

However, if you can seek out a wide track version. These have the drop-down tailgate and are ever more versatile ???

Some narrow track owners with have got the angle grinder and welder out and made a drop-down tailgate.

Prices for good Sankeys are strong, but be careful there are plenty of rotten ones out there.

I had a narrow track modified for a drop down tailgate. Brilliant trailer for towing.

I would say that 'any good' depends on your planned 'circumstances of use'.

They are reportedly strong and will withstand heavy use, BUT this strength makes them heavy in themselves, which limits (legally) the maximum payload that can be carried.

This weight also has an effect on how difficult the operator will find to move the trailer oven uneven ground.

The Sankey design uses a Nato tow ring, so your towing hitch has to be able to cope with this high attachment height.
High compared to the UK & European 50mm height, I'm not sure where the NADA 2" square receiver hitch mount fits in this hierarchy (pun intended).
Some people advocate use of a Dixon Bate adjustable hitch arrangement, with separate mounting plates for each style, the weight of which further erodes the legal towing capacity.

The narrow track Sankey has no drop tailgate, or side panels, so any load has to be lifted over the side or tail, both when loading and unloading. The associated stress on the operators back should be taken into account.

One the other hand, they can be considered to 'look right' behind a S2 vehicle, and I think will follow the tyre marks of a S2, until a corner is reached.

Regards.

I had thought that the narrow track was more suitable for a series 2a , so would a wide track be ok

Alan Drover

I had no problems with the height using an adjustable tow hitch.
Narrow or wide track, it's your choice. I think the narrow tracks were more common.
Make sure the NATO tow hitch is in the fixed position as the trailer hitch can rotate..

They are ridiculously heavy, almost 400kg. Scratched that itch so I got one. Sold it a year later. Too heavy and if not stored indoors they continue to rot. Parts like brake shoes, brake adjusters and spring bushes are almost impossible to find. The lack of a break away to lock brakes and no auto reverse brakes made reversing a loaded trailer up an incline a pain. Did however look 'cool'

Bigdog

I have been offered this narrow track, what's your thoughts and a rough idea of cost, thanks

Looks presentable enough ... what's the inside of the tub like ?
Does it have a duck board on the floor ?

The rear reflectors are illegal for road use.

If you are worried about lack of a break-away cable, one can easily be made up.There was an article in a past B2L about this.

Price ??? looking at up towards £500

Bigdog

Here is inside and he is looking for £550

Bigdog

Are wide track ones more expensive

Alan Drover

Check out the floor corners for rot then haggle. Start at £400.

Think I paid around £350 for mine about 10 years ago, fairly rotted in corners of floor but was local which a bonus.
I had planned and did made a lot of mods to the body so I wasn't bothered by the rot as chassis was good.
