Hi everyone, do I need an Expansion bottle on my series 2a 2 1/4 petrol, before when my diesel was in the rad overflow pipe just went down the side, also where would be the best place to mount the washer bottle, is it the correct one and can I fix it to the foot well as per pics, thanks

 Hi

No you do not need an expansion bottle that was something that car companies started adding in the mid 1960s to stop antifreeze dripping on the roads (Its poison to people and animals). Normally you fill the rad up to about 1 inch from the top and that leaves enough room for heat expansion.

We've covered this before.

Late 2As had the black expansion bottle.

You fill these to about half to 1/3 full of your antifreeze mixture.
During use, coolant will be drawn up into the rad header tank.
When you remove the rad cap coolant will be right to the top of the header tank. This is normal.
In a water-tight system the level in the expansion bottle remains virtually the same for long periods.

Quite why Land Rover thought a black bottle was good idea  :confused  you can't see the coolant level when you do a maintenance check  :shakinghead I have a little bamboo dip stick, kept nearby.

Your washer reservoir is off something else, a present from the scrap yard  :shakinghead

Somewhere we have a LR Service Newsletter showing the correct screen washer bottle setup.

Sorry Wittsend, I have asked so much that I have lost track 😂, can you please send a link to the correct water bottle if you can, thanks

It's just that the hose from my radiator is just too small for my expansion bottle that's why I was wondering if it's needed

Land Rover decided the radiator/cooling system would work better with the expansion bottle - so who am I to disagree with Land Rover.

Here is a picture of a homemade screen wash reservoir and bracket.
Note the pump is below the reservoir and so is always primed with fluid.

This is a not so good pic of the Series 3 washer reservoir ... note the pump is part of the lid.
This style of screen washer went into a few different vehicle of the period.
IIRC it was made by Tudor.

Perfect, I will probably need to replace my hose from the radiator to next size up so it fits the top of my expansion vessel, thanks

Bigdog

Does this one look the correct one

The washer bottle in your 1st picture is the same as used in the 2A LWTs.
These were fitted inside the cab to the right of the steering wheel.
They had a manual plunger type activator.

So probably better with one in the engine bay with a power feed

Remember the pipe from the radiator goes to the tube up the side of the bottle , not to the cap , unless you are using an alternative bottle of course

Yeah it goes to the one on the left
