What is the best engine oil for my 1970 series 2a 109 ex military 2 1/4 petrol, thanks

Alan Drover

20/50 of a reputable make. I believe Opie Oils give club members a discount.

I've used the Halfords classic for some time now. As cheap as any others and easy to pick up when passing.

I suspect several of these 'classic' oils in the metal can like the comma come from the same place.

Another vote for the Halfords Classic 20w-50. I've used it for as long as I can remember. Apparently it's the same as the old Duckhams stuff...

Once upon a time Halfords reduced oil prices every bank holiday, I guess to get people into the stores but it seems no longer, I hate paying full price for anything :shakinghead

Halfords tend to rely on discount codes now, which they advertise in email newsletters. Not long ago they had "10% off all motoring". So I used that and got 4 cans of oil and saved a decent amount.

Serious Series

Also worth checking Halfords on line price because if it is cheaper than store price you can request online price in the store.
Got caught out when I got my wife to pick up some brake pads for grandsons bike she paid way over the top in store went back next day and they refunded the difference with price match.
Mind there on line price for that oil is very high.
£29.99

Halfords classic is actually Comma Classic just in a different tin unless I am mistaken. I suspect the green colour is just coincidence. Duckhams Q only fairly recently came back on the market. I don't know who owns them now, but the cynic in me would think it's a rebrand of an already available lubricant (it might not be).

I always say it is most important to change at the specified intervals (and Lord knows I've been guilty a few times of stretching it between changes).

An expensive oil really has to make your engine last a LOT longer in order to make sense financially compared to using something like the above mentioned oils (especially those with club discount).

I use Morris Classic 20/50. I bought a 25 litre drum at a show in 2019 for £61. Still got loads left.

I'm not a trader or a mechanic but applied for a Halfords trade card and they gave me one...decent discounts on certain items.

Ah... those classic brands,  the 'olde worlde' tin without the 'olde worlde' price. There's several, Castrol's "we can see you coming' brand is my fave.

It's 4 x the price of er.. 20/50.

Clever, yet it's not at the same level as the bloke that realised you could charge £4.00 for coffee, if you make the buyer suck it thru' a slot... but nearly.
