I'm currently rebuilding a SWB 1968 series 2a that originally started life as a diesel but has had a petrol conversion at some stage in the past. The engine number is 236... suffix A which I understand would originally have been fitted to an 88 Military lightweight.

Currently it has an SU carb fitted (I think it's a HS4 version). Does anyone know what carburettor would have originally been fitted to this engine?

Yes, a Solex/Zenith type carb .... like this:-

I'd imagine the SU would be an HS6 for the size of engine. Is it a 4 or 2 bolt fitting. The former is the fixing for an HS6, the latter for an HS4.

Sorry for the delayed response. Just checked and it's a 2 bolt fixing. To be honest, I'm not too concerned as I'll aim to fit a Solex assuming I can find all the necessary bits and bobs.

Anyone fancy swapping a used (condition unknown) SU for a Solex?

You can buy brand new Zenith carbs. They may need some fettling to get working well but some have had good results with them.

I would object to buying a cheap and nasty Chinese copy of a Zenith, however cheap, and then waste time stripping it down to get it to work properly. It should work "out of the box." The best way is to get a used genuine Zenith and have it rebuilt
