How many 6 cyl owners on here?

Hi, I've only been on here and a member a couple of days but there's already been a great response to many no doubt dense questions I have. In response there's been quite a few 6 cylinder owners replying.

I just wondered how many 6 cylinder owners are on here? Before coming on here I didn't find much info/help/interest in them.

Maybe reply with a pic of yours currently and current spec?

Apologies in advance if this has already been done or if there's another way to find this out, I guess there's a way to delete the topic?

Hi there, I'm going to be converting my 109 from a 2.25d to a 3.0l IOE 6 cyl from a rover p5. So maybe me soon....hopefully

I've got a 2.6 in my 2a, it's an early-ish example from 1967. When I put it back on the road it was probably at the height of the 200tdi fitting bonanza but I decided to keep it in and I'm glad I did. I run a 200 in my daily drive S3 (and in our P4) but the 2a Carawagon doesn't get used as often so I don't mind the extra consumption too much. It is a thirsty engine but mine drags around a lot of weight, but it is so so smooth, quite torquey and sounds glorious.

I have swapped mine to a Weslake head from a P5, and it's running +.060" on the bores so it goes quite nicely for a big heavy camper but it drinks fuel accordingly and on trips now I'd be lucky to average 15mpg.

I have recently considered removing it due to increased running costs but to be honest it probably won't happen. With more people seeming to be returning to petrol power I am glad to see more sixes being saved and replaced.

For a short time I had an early Series 3 12-seater fire dept. Station with low mileage (i sold it to someone in Northern Germany) but I really wanted a Series 2. Here's a cold start I filmed when I was selling it. The valves quieted down when it was warm.

My Dormobile is a 1969 2A. It became a rolling rebuild over several years. I first got it Swiss-registered in 2009. We've travelled with it through Europe since then.

I also filmed the first start of the engine when I rebuilt it, if you like the sixpot sound.

I have an early Series 3 6 cylinder Safari 12 seater Station Wagon - it's a fantastic bit of kit! The noise is absolutely fabulous and its soooo smooth with oodles of torque.

Have a 6 cyl in my 2B FC that I'm meant to be putting back together. At the moment the engine out awaiting a rebuild before going into the new chassis.

If you happen to come across anyone selling big end bearings for these at a fair price do let me know- seems to be the standard ones have been stockpiled by the spivs hoping for 4 times the price of other sets.

That sounds lovely. I love the way these fire straight off the first turn. sounds like youve done a lot to yours

Heres my second start (first was off camera and took me by surprise after my initial compression test results). Amazing how well it ran with a coil dangling on some twisted wire and fuel pouring out of the overflow.

Same old question to everyone with a 6, what sort of MPG and what interval do you do your exhaust valve clearances? Had some very valuable feedback already, just wondering what kind of window we're looking at.

Also has anyone had trouble with cyls 5&6 overheating? Read something about it, not experienced it, but mine will be pulling 2 tonnes a lot of the time once its done.

I know the feeling, will keep an eye out for some. I suspect i'll be going at least 20thou grind. Light goes straight off and it looks like its only done 68K but having sat seized all those years I cant imagine mine will look great inside! Craddocks have some almost too good to be true piston prices, so aiming to purchase pistons there, but not decided on bearings yet. Wonder if theres any other bearings that cross reference...

For standard bearings (if that will still work for you) try Turner and Cox. I got my standard bearings, water pump rebuild kit, timing chain, oil pump etc. from them for what I thought were very fair prices, great service as well. That was about 3 years ago mind you.
My motor had more miles on it than yours but the PO. had piles and piles of bills for regular twice yearly oil changes, that must have been why the engine was in such good shape when I took it apart (aside from the blown head gasket that is.)

On my 2.25L I check and adjust the valves about every 5000 miles, normally they are fine with no changes needed. I would think that a 6 cylinder would be the same.

That looks like it's ready to go! Maybe clean the needle valve in the carb before the first trip!

I own two, one in my IIA 1-Ton hardtop, one in my series III 1 Ton cherrypicker, plus a spares engine and a part share in a third 1-Ton series III.

Plenty of videos of the six pot soundtrack on my youtube channel.
