What did you do with your Series 2 in May ?

Started up the Panda Camper for the 1st time in nearly a year. Tried yesterday in fact but the battery was flat despite having trickle charger on it. Anyway ... it fired up. Blue smoke and a bit rattley. It needs a good road run round our lanes to see if it clears.

Exhibited the Land Rover at the Thruxton Vintage event. It was the only Series there and the only other Land Rover vehicle was an LHD 1971 Range Rover on Q plates. I was advertising the Series 2 club through the spec sheet that was very kindly made for me when I attended a Series 2 club stand at Thruxton Land Rover event in June 2022.
Met a few mates that I recognised and some that knew me but I couldn't place them.
Apparently exhibiting was by invitation only.
A small event but pretty good for the organising club's first event. I will go again if I get an invite.
Cheapest burger was £6, I took my own sausage bap, considerably cheaper.
I drove home via the back roads and the temperature gauge stayed in the middle of the dial and the Kenlowe never cut in.

Still chipping away at this spare gearbox. It selects all the gears and everything seems to co round nice and smooth, so hopefully I haven't cocked it up too bad.
I had a a few different workshop manuals open. And interestingly there's a few contractions... I had an old gearbox article from an issue of CLR which had great pictures... but, they have the syncro hub in the wrong way round.

I drilled out the solid rivets yesterday that I'd used to fit the tub floor support rails so I could replace the dpm strips I'd sandwiched between them and the floor with Duralac and pop riveted them back in place, then bolted the tub on proper ahead of further reassembly.

The bonnet can do that, and it can also make a nice neat hole in the back of your head......

Spent an inordinate amount of time removing some bolts on steering box before realising I didnt need to. No locked away in the experience part of my brain.

Thanks, I'm pretty content I've got everything right. Lord knows I've spent enough time going back and forth, reading, measuring and researching. Thanks to everyone here for the advice and parts. Paul especially for the great condition syncro. 👌

Often referred to as "The Green Bible" the workshop (and parts) manuals do have mistakes in them



Some are perpetuated through each edition, others after a revision.

Brake assemblies is one area of confusion 

Maybe we could start a list of known "confusions".

Spent half the day replacing the fuel pump. Isn't that a fiddly job!

I learned a very useful lesson in doing so, though.
Tie the end of the fuel pipe, from the tank, to something above the tank. Yes, I had a gravity fed petrol shower, after it fell to the ground 

Anyone got an idea how long it should take to pump up the fuel to the carb ?

Usually 3 or 4 good pumps.
The fuel should spurt out quite strongly, catch it in something as petrol is not cheap 
Access to get your hand on the lever is not great.
It is just possible that the engine has stopped and the camshaft is "off" the pump and pumping action is not happening. Turn the engine over and try again.

2 Containers... Somehow I've still got to get 5 engines, a rear tub, 4 wings, a truck cab and a swb chassis into these two containers.

No shortage of brake drums, half shafts, wheels and axles. I suspect His Majesty's Armed Forces are short a pair of 109 Salisbury Axles. They are clearly ex-military... Technically I suppose it was under HM the Queen's watch.

Went with a group to do some lanes. One person said he had a click on his steering, so that was sorted before we left. Then the brake light wasn't working, but worked when stationary! Diagnosed as a faulty hydraulic switch. Then same vehicle, in 4wd spinning wheels locked its gearbox up. Recovered from the lane be removing the drive flanges.

All in all an eventful day, I'm shattered.

Treated my Land Rover to a pressure wash. The pressure washer wasn't so obliging and it took 5 pulls to start this time. Not much crud came off and I fixed the leak on the washer by tightening a connector.
Afterwards I checked that the lights and indicators worked, all ok.
