wheel question

The 55-57 Chevys had tubeless tyres on wheels that didn't have safety beads. The safety of this is obviously sub optimal.
I imagine correct tyre ply, profile and pressure have as much to do with the safety factor as the rim design?
 I have peeled a tyre of a modern car rim with the safety bead. However I was being a tool, not a story that needs to be shared I think.
