I'll take umbrage with that!

I've been driving since 1973, I have never caused an accident, never had a ticket in a car. My ins has never had to pay out because of ME. It has only been the couple of dufuss people who hit me who's ins has paid out. So in closing I only need uninsured motorist ins, or better yet let me save MY money and pay out any claims.
My 109 is my only car, I do have a motorbike, and that is where I got my 1 ticket.

I was refused insurance by NFU with no reason given , I don't have any bad history and had no problem getting quotes from several other companies so I don't understand why.You would think that NFU would be the last people to refuse insurance on what is basically a farm vehicle. And two of the three previous owners from new were farmers !

I don't know where you live, but I've heard people say that the NFU don't insure people in urban areas, how true that is I don't know, my business insurance is with NFU, but I'm in a rural area.

Only been refused once and that was on my IIA and what stopped the quotation process dead in its tracks was the question, how many seats does it have.
Being a station wagon I said, 10 including the driver. The reply to that was sorry sir, can't insure that on a classic policy. I can't remember what company that was with now unfortunately.

I'm in a similar position Craig except that mines a 12 seater, but when I shopped around this last time I was asked "how many of those
seats have seat belts?" and I presume that is what they based it on.
I only have belts on 4 forward facing ones.
None of them actually refused to offer me cover though.

I've just insured my IIA, 10 seat Station Wagon.

I said I was happy to be limited to carrying up to five persons, but the insurer insisted on insuring on the number of seats.

Just two front seatbelts fitted.

£112 with Flux.

I  don't know if this is a good price for a ten-seater, but I hope so as I have several LR's with them.

cswagon

How very strange.
I'm with Adrian Flux as well and they were one of the companies who asked how many seats
had belts.
5000 miles, etc. £93 odd which was £5 less than the 109 hardtop was last year.

A few years ago there was a series of high profile minibus accidents with a lot of passengers wiped out.

One upshot was that they introduced a minibus driving test for vehicles with more than 8 seats IIRC.

Unfortunately Land Rover LWB SW got caught up in this.

And - you can not safely fit seat belts to side (inward) facing seats - they cause more injuries than they are supposed to prevent.
The fitting and wearing of rear seat belt laws do not retrospectively apply to Series 2 Land Rovers.

So, I can understand the questions being asked by insurers in this matter.

I live in Rotherham so probably classed as urban although I can be in rural in about 10 mins. It would be interesting to see where the demarcation line is.

Maybe NFU should make it a bit clearer in their adverts

My ten seat wagon is now with Adrian Flux and cost about the same as yours Exile, £118.15

Does the 8 seat Law cover private use do you know ? I know years back some companies had full size busses for transporting workers. The Driver did not require PSV Licence as it was not for 'hire or reward'.   ???
When I was Driving coaches I wanted to hire a 12 seater for a family trip. A local Charity hired out theirs's over the weekend. £80 was quite reasonable.
But I would have to take their 'Diamond Mini Bus Driver Test'. But I drive Seventy seat Coaches ! You still need to take our test ?  :thud

Probably ... I don't know if there are "grandfather" rights (like for towing caravans) and the minibus test is just for new drivers.

No, it can't be. I don't think private use is an exemption.
Driving a classic vehicle will/should have an exemption.
I believe you can drive a classic bus, but with no more than 6 non-paying passengers ???

Family cars and the like are restricted to 7 seats (inc driver) so in a SWB, 3 in the front and 4 in the back is no problem.
(Providing everyone is sitting on a proper fixed seat.)

The accidents I referred to involved teachers driving school minibuses and sports clubs carrying teams.

I don't know what the situation is as I stopped driving minibuses years ago.
You'd have to ask someone in authority for the definitive answer.

When I 1st started work I had to take the "minibus" test. We had a spanking new departmental LWB SW, a 12 seater. The "test" involved driving round Leeds to the tester's mums, do some shopping for her and back to the university. Quite an easy test and a cup of tea to boot  :coffee
I "passed" as was soon driving students round the Lake District on field trips.
