I built a hybrid suffix D series 3 gearbox and mated it to a series 2a military bellhousing / clutch release which is a waterproofed version of the standard 2a bellhousing; it has been in use for seven years and is brilliant, I think it is probably the best series box you could build.

First and second gears have the s3 suffix D coffin teeth to prevent jumping out in first / second, third and fourth are standard teeth as they needed to mate to the military 2a input shaft which is required for the waterproofed clutch release. It has the strongest one piece series 3 layshaft/ gears. This is coupled with the diesel series 2a 9.5" clutch friction / diagphragm pressure plate and I used a 300tdi defender clutch pedal with series pedal pad welded to it, which gives a very light pedal.

Only thing I wish I had done is fit a s3 transfer box without straight cut low range gears.

All this was done so my wife could drive my 2a on the very odd occasion but it makes it much nicer to drive.

I will be doing a similar kind of thing when I change my engine but in my case I will be using parts from a late 2A 6 cylinder gearbox so that it will fit my IOE engine.

Mark Wilson our chairman has been very helpful with advice and the sourcing of correct parts
