I've been giving some thought to how to run a throttle cable, ideally retaining as much of the original rod system as possible. at the moment I'm thinking I could extend a small plate forwards from under the driver side bulkhead rod bracket with a post welded on to it to attach the cup for the cable outer and replace the original lever ball joint with a cable trunnion finial?

Later diesel series 3 L/Rs used a throttle cable. They had a lever on the top cross shaft which had a cup shaped holder for the end of the outer cable. The end of the inner cable was attached to a bracket on the bulkhead. The L/R set-up used the outer cable to operate the throttle with both ends of the inner cable fixed to brackets. An unusual solution but there it is.

However, it is just as possible to fix the throttle cable at the bulkhead per L/Rs design, but have the inner cable operate the throttles via the V8s carbs brackets and levers.

I used the above (even more unusual) system for my V8 with a suitable length throttle cable (Triumph something or the other ?) and it worked perfectly. Sounds very odd and it did confused a mechanic who looked at my setup once.

Alternatively, you could use the Defender throttle cable which just requires drilling a hole in the footwell and making up a lever which attaches to your L/Rs accelerator pedal.

The Series 3 set-up you mention sounds like what I'm after (changed to inner cable operation)thanks, I'll try to find a picture.

As a S2 club member you can go to the technical pages on the club's website (not this forum) and look at the S3 parts manual. All the bits should be pictured in there and give you an idea of what to get/make up.
