A nostalgic drive through the Test Valley to the village where I spent the first 25 years of my life then a walk with the dog along the Monarch's Way to the pub which I and many others frequented in our late teen/early 20's. I had a proper sandwich and some excellent real ale.
Series 3 Owner but interested in all real Land Rovers.

Took the wheels off my 109" Station Wagon.

Saw the dreaded oil drips on the inside of the wheel.

Dismantled the hub and everything said that this had not been touched since it left the factory in September 1961 :-

No sealant on any joint face no marks on the lockwashers - and the large outer hub nut would not move at all!
I struggled for hours with a box spanner and tommy bar longer than my arm, but had to give up.

Next day a friend came, We both leant on the tommy bar and I added a pair of stillsons on the box spanner. Two of us couldn't shift it. (I've never come across a hub nut so murderously tight before).

It did however, concede defeat when attacked with a vengeance, with a club hammer and cold chisel!

The hub is the early type with an oil filler in it, and the sight of how clean the hub was inside, after after 63 years (see photo) has convinced me that oil-filled hubs are better than grease-packed hubs.

So I replaced the old rock-hard oil seal (the land was was not scratched at all) and will reassemble tomorrow.

What has been a long process, he's finally on the road in Warsaw... bought from UK, transported to Poland, inspected and registered as a historic vehicle (yellow plates) and now insured and ready to go .. just in time for winter!

Made a large mess on the workbench stripping down the steering box!

Yes that is a big mess, newspaper (lots of newspaper) is your friend in situations like that.

I get large rolls of blue workshop roll through work, so no shortage of items to mop up the mess! I wouldn't mind but all this mess was even after letting it drain into a tub for a few minutes!  :thud

Drove it home with a shiny new MoT  :RHD

And a shiny new drag link assembly  :cross

Still waiting to find out the wallet damage  :confused

Ol' one-eyed Jo here!

I put the n/s wing front on yesterday and installed that side's lights. I finished filling and sanding the o/s's wing front and am waiting for the etch primer to harden another few hours before i brush and roll an undercoat on it.

Started on changing the rubber components in the braking system, but a leaking sink distracted me. Found the drain had stripped its thread - so a visit to the DIY shop is necessary and the car will have to wait.

Today was spent doing more little jobs. Cleaned up the fully dismantled rear prop ready for paint and new UJs, which should be here Monday. One of the circlips snapped and was a pig to remove. It took a while but got it out eventually.

Also cleaned and primed the 4wd lever plate, handbrake back plate and stripped the door hinges. Put another coat of black on the handbrake drum, headlight backing rings and mud shield.

Can I ask what etch primer and undercoat you're using. Once I start on the bodywork I'll have a bit of panel repair and paintwork to sort out. Be nice to have some ideas of whats good/easy to use.
Cheers

Hi Jamie,

I used Halfords etch primer aerosol merely because it was local and available quickly, and the paint is Craftmaster dark green, via Ebay for a shade over £20 for 500ml

Pulled the N/S swivel apart, to replace the swivel seal - chasing down the leak.

I drove to my wife's office this evening to install a new printer.

Cold night, but my heater wasn't blowing!!

I found the cause later at home ...

This summer I had stripped out the out "bespoke" wiring from the previous owner, and I went too far and removed the green power wire to the heater switch! The heater isn't on the wiring diagram in the Green Bible (it IS on Wittsend's diagram ... thanks, that's how I found my mistake!).

I brushed and rollered a single coat of undercoat on my o/s wing front panel. I'm looking forward to putting topcoat on it at the weekend.h
