Couldn't believe my luck, thought I would be looking for quite a while, but I happened to be looking on the dreaded eBay for something else and came across a 17H 2.5, and not hugely far from me either.

Recent rebuild and very little mileage since judging by the wear marks on the camshaft. The seller even had a scope so I could look in the sump and in spark plug holes to see bores and pistons.

Obviously I just had to have it.  :RHD

You won't regret it and it will run perfectly fine on the Series manifold and Zenith 36IV. Mine has been doing so for the past 20 plus years. I notice yours has the later one piece thermostat/bypass hose housing which mine has. Mine's an early engine with the number in a different place. If you fit the Series thermostat to top hose connector you can retain it. My heater works perfectly well using the 2.5 heater hose set up .  The heater tap on yours should fit the housing.
You're extremely lucky.

Itching to get it fitted is an understatement.

It comes with the manifolds also.

Just need a carb, lift pump, distributed and fan and we're good to go.

I forgot to mention that it's a different distributor on the 2.5. A series one will fit but probably won't have the correct advance curve etc.
The Distributor Doctor will be able to rebuild a distributor to suit if you tell him what engine it's for.
You'll need the mounting plate and gasket for the lifter pump. Use the existing bolts as it's a metric engine.
I used a Series fan on mine but now I have an electric one fitted.
Don't forget it should have a pre engaged starter and it has 9 teeth on the pinion whereas the inertia starter has 11. The solenoid activating wire can be extended to reach and best to have a new battery cable from the battery and if an alternator is fitted the wires will also need to be rerouted to the solenoid on the motor.

I can't offer any advice on fitting the 2.5 as it was done in the workshop of my mate who sold it to me.
The only advice I can offer is that if you're fitting it yourself take your time and don't be impatient to get it up and running. Get all the different bits together first.

There's already a plate fitted to take a lifter pump. I've been looking closely at the photos. If you can get one a rocker cover from a 5 mb 2.25 petrol engine will fit and it has the separate orange oil filler cap which makes it easier rather than removing the breather cap on the original cover.
The cover on your engine is very expensive to buy so if you do change it keep it as it will be worth something to someone who likes originality.

Does it come with a manifold with 4-stud fixing for the Weber twin choke carb, or a 2-stud fixing for a Zenith?

If the latter, you are in luck.  If the former, best of luck!

AD, do you know what the plug is for, at the 1 o' clock position on the flywheel housing?

You'll need the Series exhaust manifold too. Can you use your existing ones and get the full length manifold to head gasket not the small ones normally fitted to that engine. The Series 2 full length one will fit and I believe HNJ sell good quality gaskets.

I run an ACR Performance Plus inlet manifold and SU carb on the 2.5 in my Series 1 along with ACR branch manifold and  custom built exhaust system of the correct diameter. Goes quite well......

Thankfully comes with the two stud.

Stick with the Zenith 36IV then. You'll need a manifold to carburettor adapter though. I might have a spare one for sale if you need one  I'll have a look tomorrow and let you know.

Thankyou Alan, as for exhaust manifold, I know the lad from Demand Engineering who always willing to help with custom exhaust and manifold fabrication.

With the manifold on there a standard Series exhaust will fit.
Post #3 on this topic has photos of the 2.5 in my Land Rover if it's any help.

I've been thinking about engine mounts over night, do you have any pictures of yours? I presume the standard series 2.25 engine brackets just bolt on?

Looks like I'm going to have weld on some new chassis engine brackets as the current ones are definitely not series 2a brackets.
