I was in the same situation as both my late wife and I were civil servants.
I've seen you a PM.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for your reply, but ever since a "tyro" guru set up my last brand new W10 PC, I have been unable to receive E-mail, and have no idea if MY ]SENT mail actually arrives.  I suspect that I will need to buy another new lap-top. Something not too expensive, and simple. Suggestions?

Barbara had done all the ground work for her own funeral (direct cremation with NO service and briefed our daughter (SARA) on any extra details. Sara roped  in all her managerial colleagues. It all went like clockwork

John - a PM or personal message is not an email. It runs within this forum. How your laptop or tablet is set up, should not impact on the forum viewing unlike your emails.
At the top of this page, you should see a "My Messages" icon. If you click on that, your PMs should be there.
Have a look - if you cannot see it, it may be because you are viewing on a tablet or some different web layout, but it should be there somewhere.

John, it's the left hand image, looks like a letter rack next to the bell.
If you still have problems I can give you my mobile number on the forum.

That looks to be the layout on a tablet or phone. On my Windows 10 laptop looking at the forum in Google Chrome, its just a text box saying "My Messages".

On Mac OSX it's the same thing. See pictures below (second one after clicking on it).

Forgot to mention it John but I put my phone number in the 3rd message so if you're able to read the messages feel free to ring me.
I didn't realise the icons for tablets and phones were different.

HI Worf,

Thanks for that link.

I will wait until Sara visits next (maybe today?) and let her take a photo of the relevant text.

I can do scarcely anything with my laptop, since that incompetent guru got his hands on it. (He did mention that his client base was not building as fast as he expected).

My daughter seems pretty clued up, but works all hours. From what I can glean from what little I overhear, she has much in common with various Dick Francis (the author) characters.

"Golly Gosh!". Is that what they call a "Plethora?

She has left me will the job of returning all her "Wellfare" stuff ... hospital bed, commode on wheels (unused), walking frame, and metal walking stick (both unused), over-bed table, shower stool,"engine lifting crane lookalike" with arm-pit straps, and a "struggling bar" that clamped onto the side of her bed-frame.

I bought her electric wheel-chair, with tiny "tiller switch" control, from our own resources ... I can't remember what it cost. Social Services demanded to know where we got it, as they recognised that it was not "One of theirs".

I guess I will have to get my daughter in, to move into the next stage ...."Black bag time".

The new battery powered Hyundai KONA is already insured and registered in my name. Barbara never got a chance to even sit in, nor even gaze upon it.

Nil Illigitimo Carburundum!

Alan, My daughter says that Social Services will expect to be paid for visiting both of us, four times a day. Do you know if BENEDEN will cover the cost of Care Workers?

No doubt there will be more to come.

Morning John.
I didn't belong to Beneden so I can't advise. I believe my late wife did but she didn't have any social workers.
I know this sounds somewhat morbid but when you register the death obtain about 12 death certificate copies. I needed 11 as they were needed by DWP, Civil Service Pensions and other organisations and I nearly ran out of copies. They were all returned eventually.

^^^^^ very sound advice ^^^^^ You will need lots of copies. Photostats are not good enough.

I am told there is also a phone number option but this system allows you to notify all Government Departments at once, reducing the need for multiple certificates.
Insurers and undertakers will need their own but the one notification system is apparently very good.

Alan Drover

I found out about it too late as I notified every necessary department by phone when my wife died last year.

Hi Everybody,

Thankyou  all for your thoughts and replies.

No, I have no thoughts about leaving the forum, but do not anticipate getting my hands dirty again, so will be working towards emptying my garage of most of my tools and equipment.

There is bench grinder, a pillar drill, a battered 5" (?) vice, a torque wrench, a tin box full of assorted ring and open ended spanners

DOH! My ladies have arrived .... I will return  ....
