Starter Motor

Looking to replace the starter motor for 2.25 petrol any recommendations.
Plenty to choose from after search online.

I've used aftermarket brushes on a 2 litre and a 2.25 engine, working well so far.
If you don't have a big soldering iron let an auto sparks fit them for you, cheap to sort out as a skim on comm if needed

They can fail in ways other than brushes.

The original starter on my 2286 petrol engine was likely the reason the Land Rover got abandoned before I found it as it didn't work even after a rebuild with new brushes.

It span over fine on the bench and looked great but it simply wouldn't turn over the engine. After charging the battery, changing the battery, checking leads etc. I took the starter apart again and circuit tested it according to the earlier series 2 workshop manual.
One of the windings on the armature was open circuit so the starter wasn't working on all the coils. Plenty enough to spin it on the bench but not to turn the engine over.

Fortunately I had a spare starter lying around so I tested that one, swapped out the armature into the original casing as I wanted to keep the 1967 dated one, and then it worked a treat.

Thats the concern take the thing apart fit new brushes test and still the same, seem to be 1 step forward and 2 back at the moment. Think i will order replacement is there a difference with starters for early 2.25 petrol.
Like the idea of powerlite but trying to keep costs down.

If the 2.25L engine was designed to be started with a crank handle, why do you need a high torque starter ?

Because it takes far less current than the old school inertia starter and it's much easier than hand cranking. Most importantly it doesn't require the downpipe to be removed to get it in and out.
The WOSP high torque starter motor on my 2.5 petrol engine is rated at 1400 watts (almost 117 amps) far less than the original.

Any starter for a petrol 2286 should fit fine.
The same starter was even used on the second version of the 2 litre series one engine and I believe it was still in use right through until the 2.5 engines came around in the 90 / 110 models.

I had one of these starters on my 2.25 petrol before I went TDI, it was well worth the cost

Most importantly it doesn't require the downpipe to be removed to get it in and out.

Never ever had a SII or a SIII 2.25 Petrol where I needed to take the the exhaust off for a starter motor
