oxy acetylene kit
« on: July 13, 2020, 07:11:23 PM »

I have in my possession my dads old oxy acetylene kit, pipes, gauges ,torch ect last used by myself about 30 years ago, it must be at least 50 years old.
Common sense says I should scrap the lot (that safety thing again).
what does the team think?

If you were contemplating using it again, I would work on the basis that everything rubber/plastic has degraded and needs to be replaced. Everything metal I would inspect condition but if not corroded I would be happy using it.

You should technically replace the gauges but I must admit nobody has given me a convincing explanation as to why and I do use out of date gauges myself, but admittedly that is on inert gas. I wouldn't trust them as calibrated for flow rate, but since you generally set up a flame by size and colour that doesn't seem too relevant. Valves are more important but again, if clean I would not be unhappy using them. I would very thoroughly degrease anything going on the oxygen line though as pick-up of atmospheric oil and grease is a real issue.
