Colour of 5MB metric diesel engines
« on: August 30, 2021, 02:22:38 PM »

I have been part of a discussion on the S1 forum about engine colours.

My engine is a 5mb with the ribbed block, it is painted a terracotta red but someone is saying thet the 5Mb diesels were painted black.

Anyone got any information?

James Taylor in the series III guide says the 5MB diesel engines were painted red.

I believe both petrol and diesel 5 bearing engines had a terracotta block and a black cylinder head as does the 2.5 petrol
and diesel.
Easy to tell apart. The 2.5 diesel has a timing belt and the petrol a spin on filter and the oil filler is the breather cap (except on mine.)

5-bearing engines are terracotta red, with black heads. From the first 2.25 versions fitted to late series 3s, right up to the last 2.5 petrol and Turbo D engines fitted to 90 and 110 models.

Mine has an engine number = 36113270

As far as I know it is a 5 bearing diesel engine.
Don't know about metric or not ??? what I know is that the fittings thread holes are UNF imperial.
Can't speak for the crank fittings. Front crank nut is 1" Whitworth. Sump screws 5/16" UNF. Head bolts 1/2" UNF etc.

The 5 bearing crank has the dip stick in a different position to miss the extra bearing next to it.

The 5 bearing crank has the dip stick in a different position to miss the extra bearing next to it.

Which means that an earlier sump won't fit the later engine (don't ask me how I know).
Well, it will fit, but the dipstick may or may not go into the oil  :thud

You can see the different size dipstick openings in the picture.

It would be an easy mod to make it fit though Andrew

Thats how I found  out as well,  tried fitted a 3 bearing sump to a 5 bearing block. Land Rover messed up with the part numbering , modified the sump for 5 bearings and initially kept the same part number . This should only happen if the part is interchangeable new for old and old for new . In this case the new will fit a 3 bearing but not the other way.

I have a very battered and dented sump to fit to my IOE engine.  Nephew is taking it to work where someone will cut the baffle plate out, return the bottom of the sump to the correct shape and then TIG weld the baffle back in.  He assures me there will be no sign of the damage nor of the welding.  Given that they have welded some serious cracks in rthe block i believe him
