Hindsight is a wondrous gift.

A museum is no different to anyone else.
Be very careful what you lend. Never lend anything that you can't afford to lose or have returned broken.

 
If you are going to lend an item to a museum, make a legally binding contract - have the item valued, and make sure they agree the value and confirm they have it insured.
Never leave documents or photographs with anyone, don't let originals out of your sight - use copies - even the DVLA are good at loosing paperwork and there's no "come back"

Hi,

That is a Gibson or Brockhouse Gibson trailer, there are several owned by members of the series one club.

I have a slightly later Brockhouse BT 9 with “Easy clean” wheels.

I have only seen one on the series one site as the owner photographed the mudguard brackets as mine are missing.
The original ID plate has no mention of Brockhouse on it? ( I will have to check) But the name Gibson and Brockhouse appeared together in the 1934 Graces guide so who knows?
What would you value it at?

Yes that is one of the trailers I was thinking of.
I think Brockhouse may have bought out Gibson Trailers at some point, possibly in the thirties(but that's only a guess)
I did try to post pictures of my later Brockhouse trailer without success, but the chassis, drawbar and hitch are very similar.

FWIW, I run a "Collection" at work (aka a museum). We don't take stuff on loan, you either donate, or foxtrot oscar. Frankly, taking stuff on loan is a right pain in the fundamentals. You have to insure and look after the item, find space for it, create a display for it, properly database it, conserve it, etc etc, and the owner (or their family once he/her is dead) can just walk off with it.

I note the bit about the legally binding contract etc. - for myself, again from a museum perspective, I simply wouldn't bother.

If you don't want it, sell it or donate it. Just don't pass your storage problem on to someone else and expect them to sort it out for you.

He reckons museums prefers a gift as a 25 year loan is a long term headache.

Perhaps sell to someone keen and let them be the custodian?

Thats nice, Mine uses a rare type of Morris 8 wheel, luckily I have a spare, makes me want to keep mine even more

Personally I would keep it if you can find somewhere to keep it.

I have several small vintage trailers, mainly Brockhouses of various ages. I can’t resist them when they turn up at the right price. However when I’ve sold trailers they never make what it’s cost to restore, intact the last one which was unrestored, I virtually gave away.

The guy with the eBay trailer has had two for sale for some time.
