Spare Wheel Well 330602
« on: November 18, 2020, 08:25:03 AM »

Are these wells big enough to hold a 235/85 tyre ???
I'm thinking of fitting into the top of a 88" rear wheel arch box or into the floor behind the rear bulkhead that I want to lower/slope back

any advice please

If you mean the ones that fit in the wheel box of a 109” then no, they’re not wide enough for a 235; they’re about 1” too narrow. A few years ago I “cut and shut” two to make a wider version, and had it galvanised with some other bits.

Thank you, I feared width might be a issue and I also thought about joining 2 but I would have to find 2 and wondered if it might be a lot of work for very little gain :shakeinghead
It might be better to wait untill I need new tyres and fit 750's which might fit the well or a swing away type carrier, although not cheap or secure

Use a scabby old 7.50 as a get you home spare if it's exposed or on a swingaway carrier. Much less likely to get nicked and no need to worry about security.

Been looking at swing away carriers, with a 750 or 235/85 it looks in the pictures of these that the tyre covers the handle, can I still open/lock the door?
Also I see these are not cheap, hence my wanted add I posted for a good used one

I have 7.50x16 on mine, you can get at the door handle.

I have one of those covers over the spare - keeps the sun off it.

Thank you for that, I'll keep looking for a good (cheap) one but that might be hard :whistle

I got one off the bay - had to drive 80 miles to get it (pre-lockdown then1), but it was a good price. £60 instead of £160!

Hi,

Asking coz I don't know ... Is there room on a SWB, to drop the spare wheel into the wheel box, and still have clearance above the road whee/tyre?

The LWB  has room for two spare wheels sunk into wheel box, but each pair straddles the road wheel, I suspect (no more than that) that on a SWB, the  spare wheel would sit above (or thereabouts) the road wheel.

Two idle thoughts ...

How about sinking the spare not so deep into the wheelbox, and mount an "up-stand" onn the gunnel, with a wing-nut thingy, like is used to hold the spare to the back of cab bulkhead.

There os no operational need for the bottom of the spare recess to be rounded, A square box would be easier to make if you have access to a folding press. Chequer plate even?)

And while you are about it, why not make a box , to fit above the other rear wheel, to carry your little trolley jack? I mean there is nowhere sensible to carry it. ???
