Data protection in other Clubs?

Thanks, the question asked was about people's experiences with what other clubs do, not what we do.
A strange request, but we allowed it.

We are fully compliant with good GDPR practice.

Both of the yacht clubs I'm a member of send a booklet to all members annually with members names, addresses, phone numbers and emails. A throwback to how clubs operated before the internet I guess.

My alumni association is the same. Any member wanting to look up another member just looks in the members' list.

I wonder if the olde worlde organisations have just let the "new" legislation pass them by or are exempt ?

I suspect I know the answer

I also suspect that there are / were two attitudes to GDPR - the one above (wihch may include a statement / agreement to having ones details passed to others in the organisation) or the "kneejerk" no-one can have it (knowledge is power type)

Interesting. Thanks for the input

Year's ago my friend was in the Bentley Owners Club and members got a stitched leather bound register of the members', address and car number.
That was back in the days when cars weren't stolen or people worried about their "personal data".
How times have changed.

I think you have to go with what the laws and regulations were in place at the time of publication.
(Many owners will have died off and vehicles scrapped by now.)

Many car clubs produced a register of members and on joining you got a copy.

The vehicle register that is part of our membership system allows the member to decide what info is displayed publicly. Contact between members is by a "cut-out" email, so member A can send an initial email to Member B without knowing who Member B actually is or where they live.

I suspect the two attitudes are linked to ones willingness or ability to fully understand the legislation. A bit like health and safety, there are those who understand it and bring in common sense measures and those who don't who just impose all encompassing restrictions with no thought to consequence.

That said I can fully understand members of a car club wanting their locations kept private. All classic cars are becoming increasingly valuable and they are by their very nature quite portable.

Then there are those who cover up their number plates in photographs but happily drive round with them uncovered !!
I am of the school that if you wish to keep your ownership of a car a secret, then why join a club ? Location - as in address - I can understand.
