PED and HDO - anyone familiar with these terms?

Afternoon all,

I've been spending Fridays this year encamped at the British Motor Museum, going through the factory records, saddo that I am. When it comes to Landys sent overseas, there's often an HDO or PED next to the name of the recipient, who is often an individual. Does anyone know what these designations stand for? They're clearly some sort of import/export/intermediary or even the name of the end user customer. Typical examples would be:

HDO Col Le Blanc, Switzerland
PED Richardson, Illinois

As the destination for a particular truck. In some cases, we have details of who eventually disposed of that truck, so against the Illinois one, for instance, there's "Disposal Mrs Richardson" followed by a date a day or so after the factory despatch date.

Grateful for any illumination - I see it so often and am annoyed at my ignorance!

Never seen those before - and I've looked at a few dispatch records in my time.

Nor have I seen them mentioned in James Taylor's books (and he must have spent more time researching at the BMM than even you)!



We could have great fun guessing though....

PED nothing either. Something to do with Date? Ask the Museum?

There is something called the Personal Export Scheme (VAT Notice 707), Could the D in your PED refer to Duty  ???

Alternatively, it could refer to Permanent Export D****

I was thinking PED could be Personal Export, often collected at the Factory . I visited Gaydon with a Rover owner from USA , he was looking at the Dispatch book for a Rover 100 that his father  collected from Solihull back in the 1960's , drove round UK & Europe for a few months  and then shipped it to US. It was shown as personal export dispatched to his father.
There is a little bell ringing in my head re Col Le Blank. Did he not have a special relationship with the Rover Co. somehow?

The Colonel turns up 10 times in the database, all for Beirut imports. Personal Export would make sense as they're mostly individuals. Wish it translated to an obvious equivalent for HDO!

On my heritage certificate I quoted the registration number of SYV 329F and it says it was issued under the "Home Delivery Export Scheme". Always wondered what that was. Mine went to Malta in April 1967 and it did return to the UK around 6 months later being registered in the UK in October 1967 It should have been on "E" plate I think but it got the "F" plate as it was in October.
I think 1967 was the year they changed the month the registration change happened from January to August so "E" plates were only around for 7 months.

Thanks Craig, I think that may be it - 'Hone Delivery Order' might have been the internal designation. It would certainly explain why so many of them were disposed off very shortly after taking delivery.

I remember cars with a yellow rim to the number plate in the '60s being something to do with personal exports. This link:

I thought it was a red rim. At the time I didn't know what it was for and painted a red rim round the number plates on my Morris Oxford. I was pulled over by the police who explained what the red rim was for so I had to remove it.
Edit. Further thinking about this and now I'm not sure what the colour was. Whatever colour I'd painted the rims of my number plates I had to remove it.
Series 3 Owner but interested in all real Land Rovers.

My father bought a car under this scheme, we were going to Singapore, the car turned up there eventually. He had to keep it abroad for a certain time, it was then brought back to the UK. It was a 1966 model on 1969 plates. No rust of course!

Col. LeBlanc was the chap who went round Africa in a (then new) 107" SW in 1954 which I think at least one of them still exists. Was one of the first Land rover explorers in a 80" in 1949 to Ethiopia.
 I think Les Lawrence wrote something about it in a legend, he may own the 107.
