Checking the water in the rad this afternoon, the cap fell apart. Its only 12 months old. Anybody else had this happen, is there better suppliers out there for a early  series 2 rad cap.

I ordered one from Emberton this afternoon.
Hopefully better quality.

Yup! Had exactly the same happen to one I was looking at last week. All I did was check the coolant level and it fell to pieces in my hands. Looks like there is a batch of very badly made ones out there. I've no idea where the one I looked at came from, but I replaced it with an original Unipart one which on test, cracked at the right pressure, so all good.

Me, a few weeks ago, when I checked the coolant level of the MG TF. The rad cap goes on the expansion tank, was only a few months old, and came apart in my hands when I took it off. I was able to put it together again, but I wasn't prepared to take risks, not with the complex coolant system of the Rover 1.8, so I put on a new one I had already ordered as a backup. These rad caps are of notoriously bad quality. I know of a supplier who pressure checked his entire stock after a storm of complaints from customers and binned 70% of 'em... Different caps for different cars, but in today's world of international division of labour maybe the same Chinese manufacturer?
