A very similar situation to myself. I'm in the process of selling up. Getting ready to put them on For Sale.

Got a new set of tyres this afternoon, chap gave me some good advice and told me to fit an electric distributor.
Will add it to my list for September.

I'd caution that advice.

By all means fit electronic ignition (PerTronix, PowerSpark or Luminition) to a new Lucas D25 distributor, then you have the best of both worlds. Contactless ignition, with the ability to revert back to conventional points should something go wrong.
Fit a red rotor arm  :red-rotor  and a Lucas gold sports coil  :gold-cup

Some of these cheapo (Chinese) electronic distributors lack quality and if they go wrong you are stuffed.
Important to get a distributor specifically set up for a Land Rover engine, correct advance curve etc.

I agree with Wittsend. I had an all electronic distributor on my Series 3 a few years ago and the 2.5 petrol was gutless. I had set it up per the book. A misfire developed so I contacted the supplier who told me to send it back. In the meantime I fitted the proper distributor with points and condenser and power was restored. I had a spare distributor rebuilt by the Distributor Doctor and fitted with Pertronix electronic ignition. After setting up about 12 years ago the only thing I have done to the distributor is the occasional drop of oil and a new cap because the carbon brush was wearing away.
I never got the electronic distributor back because it "got lost" and I received a full refund which was much more preferable.
Series 3 Owner but interested in all real Land Rovers.

Thanks both for the advice, really appreciated as I barely know what I'm doing. Will look into all of that and check out the Distributor Doctor, for sure.

Who's bright idea was it to put captive nuts inside the bulkhead pillars...? Someone who didn't envisage them still being around 60 odd years later, I expect.

Stripped the thread of a front U bolt when torquing up. No more than 40 foot pounds! The other 3 "old original" ones were fine upto 60. This was was a Britpart one :(

Then filled the swivel hubs and axle and drained/sucked the oil out of the steering box (that stank of 60 year old ashtrays) and fixed the leak/weep on the adjuster with some PTFE tape.

Also fitted the steering rod on the drop link to relay with new ends.

Not today but last weekend, I finally put the land rover to proper work for the first time in the 12 years I've owned it.

After modifying and fitting an 110 TD5 drop plate, I'm now finally able to tow the trailer  :gold-cup
Sunday's task: dropping of the horse menure of my girlfriend's horses at a friendly farmer, and taking back with us 10 bales of straw for the stables.
Must say the land rover drives a lot more comfortable with some weight on the back :RHD

Little Bulkhead repair thanks to dad, (metalkoi) back in the day while I replacing a rear hub seal

Fitted the steering rods (saved my originals for later), fitted new wheels and tyres and bled the clutch.
Decided after seeing the colour of the fluid it would be best to flush it through!

First "real" (non test-drive) outing in "Grethe" today.....off to a drinks party at friends a few miles away. It will be the first time on a proper road as opposed to deserted country lanes. I'll probably end up packing my entire toolkit, socket set, fuel, oil, brake fluid, water.....what am I forgetting?

Big Yellow Taxi card?  :flasher

Good luck! Seriously though, judging by how much effort has clearly gone into this vehicle, I'm sure you will be fine!
