I've spent another day on my 88's loom. I found the horn wire fault this afternoon and rectified it. Does anyone know the thread of the clamps that hold the instruments and gauges to the dash panel? One of the knurled aluminium wheels has corroded to one of them and I want to run a die down it.

Beware the guage clamps have two different threads depending what year vehicle , I have a series 3 but also have a few guages from unknown origins and came across the differences.

Checking the coolant this morning I discovered the radiator cap seal is falling to pieces so a new one ordered from Dingocroft.

Practised using the starting handle several times on Saturday morning, before I had time to swap out a problematic starter. A scary experience with a rebuilt engine that actually has decent compression. At home I took the time to retard the timing first. I then managed most of the rest of the day using various forwards and (!backwards) hill-starts. But one stupid mistake crossing the A702 left me stopped on the flat at a the busy junction and I had to do it in front of a queue of traffic without adjusting the timing. Fortunately the engine was warm by then and it went on the third pull. Always just one sharp pull (never push) with a loose grip and immediately jump away (don't wait to find out if it's worked or not) before it can break your arms or your whole body if it fires backwards.

Make sure thumb and fingers are on the same side of the handle so if it kicks back the handle will come out of your grip (and maybe whack the back of your hand if you're not quick enough to pull it out of the way but it won't result in a broken thumb joint).

493 miles. Dover to Ayr. Set off at 06:00, pit stop and a couple of minor detours to collect stuff, and in Ayr by 17:30.

I put a little dab of superglue on each of the plastic lugs of all my warning light bezels and let them dry before refitting to the dash panel so they won't so readily pop out anymore.

Overhauled my clutch master cylinder nicely. It was an experiment while the Landy is on agricultural duties away from tarmac. No costs involved. I'll see how it goes. Spilt the jam jar of brake fluid while bleeding

Got some bolts (3/8" BSW - thanks diffwhine), cut the bolts and fitted the OD. Cut off 1/8". They are 5" long and early transfer cases aren't threaded fully.
Torqued them up and now ready for the next job.

Finally discovered what the high pitch squeaking noise that sounded like something loose under the car was.

It only happened when releasing the accelerator and for a few seconds before the car slowed on the overrun. Spent a while looking for loose brackets on the recently fitted exhaust, checking springs, gearbox mounts, even the handbrake linkage.

Anyway, it was the rear universal joint on the propshaft. Working perfectly, but tell tale rusty dust around the seals.

Jacked a rear wheel and released the handbrake to allow me to move the shaft, and it's definitely seen better days.

The final straw must have been the thorough jet washing I treated the underside to, whilst I replaced the exhaust recently. I obviously got water past the seals.

Family affairs in Ayr all concluded yesterday, so an early start and another 230 miles today. Set up on a campsite at the side of Loch Ness for the night.

Having prepped the 109 camper conversion today for the holiday on Skye (leaving tomorrow) I'm seriously thinking of canning it. The weather is going to be abismal, highwinds and rain for week. Should have gone to rally instead. Sometimes I consider moving South of the border just to get away from it.
